Review :
Mae troad yr unfed ganrif ar hugain wedi gweld twf aruthrol yng ngweithgarwch barddol menywod yng Nghymru. Bellach, y mae iddynt le haeddiannol ar lwyfan yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol, mewn talyrnau barddol ledled y wlad, a hyd yn oed ar fur Canolfan y Mileniwm. Mae enwau Mererid Hopwood, Gwyneth Lewis a Menna Elfyn erbyn hyn yn hen gyfarwydd, ond beth am eu neiniau barddol? Yn anffodus, ychydig iawn sy’n hysbys am neb ac eithrio Gwerful Mechain ac Ann Griffiths, ond yn y gyfrol hon dengys Cathryn Charnell-White i ni fod yna gyfoeth o destunau gan ferched wedi goroesi dros y canrifoedd mewn llawysgrif ac mewn print. Hon yw’r flodeugerdd gyntaf erioed o farddoniaeth Gymraeg gan ferched a gyfansoddwyd rhwng tua 1500 a 1800. Bydd nifer helaeth y cerddi yn gwbl anghyfarwydd, ac felly hefyd y cyfansoddwyr - merched megis Gwenllïan ferch Rhirid Flaidd, Catrin Cythin a Bes Powys. Fel yr eglura’r rhagymadrodd cynhwysfawr i’r testunau, nid safon israddol y cerddi sy’n egluro pam na welsant olau dydd ers cyhyd, ond y ffaith syml mai merched yw’r cyfansoddwyr. Roedd cyfundrefn farddol swyddogol yr Oesoedd Canol yn gaeedig i ferched, nid oedd ganddynt fawr o amser rhydd i farddoni ac ni ddangosodd casglwyr a beirniaid llenyddol diweddarach fawr o ddiddordeb yn eu canu tan yn gymharol ddiweddar. Ond er gwaethaf hynny, mae’r testunau a gasglwyd ynghyd yn y gyfrol hon yn dangos i nifer sylweddol o ferched feistroli’r canu caeth a rhydd ac i’w barddoniaeth gyflawni’r un swyddogaeth gymdeithasol bwysig â barddoniaeth gan ddynion yn aml iawn. Ceir yma gerddi mawl a marwnad i bwysigion lleol, cywyddau gofyn, penillion priodas a baledi newyddiadurol. O bryd i’w gilydd, clywn gyffyrddiad mwy personol yn y canu sy’n bradychu’r ffaith mai merch a’i cyfansoddodd; sylwer, er enghraifft, ar alarnad Susan Jones am ei merch (rhif 140). Mae’r testunau a geir yn y gyfrol hon yn arwyddocaol oherwydd eu bod yn brawf diamheuol bod merched yn barddoni rhwng 1500 a 1800, ac maent hefyd yn dangos ei bod hi’n dderbyniol i ferched brydyddu yn ystod y cyfnod modern cynnar. Ymddengys nad oedd gwrthwynebiad cryf i’w gweithgarwch gan nad canu yn y dirgel dan ffugenwau oedd y merched hyn eithr yr oedd ambell un, megis Lowri Parry, yn fardd proffesiynol yn cyfansoddi ac yn argraffu baledi heb geisio celu ei henw. Dyma flodeugerdd bwysig iawn yn hanes ysgolheictod y Gymraeg sy’n agor y drws ar faes a fydd yn sicr o ddwyn ffrwyth i ymchwilwyr y dyfodol. Yn ogystal â’r rhagymadrodd dadlennol, ceir nodiadau golygyddol, crynodebau bywgraffyddol a geirfa ddefnyddiol i gyd-fynd â’r 163 o gerddi a olygwyd gan yr awdur. Bydd unrhyw un sydd â diddordeb yn hanes llenyddiaeth 1500–1800 ac astudiaethau menywod yn cael budd mawr o ddarllen y gyfrol hon, a bydd y cerddi eu hunain yn sicr o apelio at bawb sy’n mwynhau barddoniaeth.
