About the Book

In this anthology, edited by Arwyn Davies, we are introduced to Montgomeryshire's poets and their work, and also to the rich heritage of the bardic tradition in the area.

Review :
Braf oedd gweld y gyfrol Beirdd Bro Eisteddfod Maldwyn yn cael ei chyhoeddi i gyd-fynd dyfodiad yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol i'r fro honno eleni. Cyfrol debyg yw hon i'w dwy ragflaenydd, a oedd yn cynnwys cerddi gan feirdd Bro Dinbych a Sir Gr. Golygydd y gyfrol y tro hwn yw Arwyn Groe, gwr sydd wedi'i wreiddio'n ddwfn yn naear Maldwyn, ac sy'n enw ac yn wyneb cyfarwydd i'r rhai sy'n dilyn talyrnau ac ymrysonau. Ar ddechrau'r gyfrol ceir pennod hynod ddifyr gan y prifardd Cyril Jones, o dan y teitl 'Traddodiad Barddol Maldwyn'. Cyfeiria at feirdd fel Ceiriog, Gwallter Mechain, Dafydd Llwyd a'r emynyddes Ann Griffiths, yn ogystal rhai mwy cyfoes fel Gwilym R. Tilsli, Iorwerth Peate ac Emrys Roberts. Sonnir hefyd am feirdd Eingl-Gymreig fel R. S. Thomas a Wilfred Owen, wrth i Cyril 'deithio'n lled fympwyol ar draws y canrifoedd'. Mae'n cyfeirio at ddatblygiad yr englyn a'r cywydd o gyfnod Llywarch Hen hyd heddiw, ac fel 'mae'r hen fesurau a wreiddiwyd mor ddwfn yn naear Maldwyn yn dal i ffynnu'. Ymlaen at y beirdd a'r cerddi felly. Gwaith tri ar ddeg o feirdd cyfoes Maldwyn sydd yma un ar ddeg dyn a dwy ferch, ac mae dau ohonynt, Cyril Jones a Penri Roberts, yn brifeirdd. Fel y gellid disgwyl, ceir yma amrywiaeth eang o ran mesurau ac o ran cynnwys, gyda'r englyn yn cael lle amlwg. Un o nodweddion beirdd gwlad ar hyd yr oesau yw mai cerddi cymdeithasol yw llawer o'u gwaith cerddi i bobl, i achlysuron ac i ddigwyddiadau o fewn cymdeithas, gyda cherddi coffa yn cael lle amlwg. Ac mae amryw o gerddi ac englynion coffa o fewn i'r gyfrol hon, a phob un ohonynt sglein arbennig arnynt, fel englyn Gwilym Fychan i Edryd, ei gefnder, neu englyn Arwyn Groe i gofio am y prifardd Emrys Roberts. Ond ceir y difyr a'r gogleisiol yma hefyd, fel yr englyn hwn gan Dafydd Wyn Jones, 'Llawdriniaeth': Arwr y da, 'rhen darw du, yn fustach, Bu'n feistar y beudy, Ni all hwn 'rl cyllell hy Huw Geraint mwyach garu. Fel cantores yr ydym fwyaf cyfarwydd Linda Griffiths, a gwyddom fel y mae nifer fawr o'i chaneuon wedi codi o dir a daear ei hoff Faldwyn. A braf yw gweld rhai or caneuon hynny yn y gyfrol, a'r gn 'l ei droed' yn arbennig yn cyfeirio at fagwraeth Linda ar fferm Pen-y-bryn. Un arall y gwyddom yn dda am ei ddawn fel cyfansoddwr geiriau caneuon cofiadwy yw Penri Roberts, a chofiwn am ei waith gwych fel un o'r criw a sefydlodd Gwmni Theatr Maldwyn. Hyfryd gweld geiriau dwy o'i ganeuon adnabyddus, 'Cannwyll ein Rhyddid' ac 'Eryr Pengwern' yn y gyfrol hon. O edrych ar y gyfrol yn ei chrynswth, fe welir bod cydbwysedd da rhwng y cerddi caeth a'r rhydd. Mae'r cywyddau a'r englynion yn dangos yn glir fod crefftwyr wrth eu gwaith, ond mae sonedau Dafydd Morgan Lewis a cherddi penrhydd fel rhai Ann Fychan yn gaboledig iawn hefyd. Bu Eisteddfod Maldwyn a'r Gororau yn llwyddiannus iawn eleni ar bob ystyr, a braf oedd cael treulio peth amser yno. Bu'r adran lenyddol yn hynod lewyrchus ac ni fu'n rhaid atal y wobr yn yr un o'r cystadlaethau. Bun gynhaeaf llenyddol toreithiog, ac mae'r gyfrol hon yn ychwanegiad gwerthfawr iawn at y cynhaeaf hwnnw. Mwynhewch bori ynddi.
