Although breathing control is known to be one of the most vital and vulnerable systems during development, the mechanisms which are responsible for the regulation of breathing and their adaptation from fetal life to maturity are still poorly understood. This publication covers the most important aspects of current research in the field: the physiology of neuromodulators like dopamine and serotonin and of the development of their receptors either peripherally or in the brain stem, the effect of hypoxia on the respiratory drive, apnea and its role in sudden infant death syndrome. This issue is valuable reading for everyone concerned with respiration during development.
