About the Book

Although breathing control is known to be one of the most vital and vulnerable systems during development, the mechanisms which are responsible for the regulation of breathing and their adaptation from fetal life to maturity are still poorly understood. This publication covers the most important aspects of current research in the field: the physiology of neuromodulators like dopamine and serotonin and of the development of their receptors either peripherally or in the brain stem, the effect of hypoxia on the respiratory drive, apnea and its role in sudden infant death syndrome. This issue is valuable reading for everyone concerned with respiration during development.

Table of Contents:
Foreword, P. Vert et al; carotid body chemoreception - mechanisms and dynamic protection against apnea, S. Lahiri; effect of dopamine on carotid chemoreceptor activity in newborn kittens, A. Bairam et al; birth-related changes of expression and turnover of some neuroactive agents and respiratory control, H. Lagercrantz et al; in search of the real respiratory neurons - culture of medullary fetal cells sensitive to CO2 and low pH, H. Rigatto et al; arcuate nucleus hypoplasia in sudden infant death syndrome - a review, J.J. Filiano; mechanisms of neuronal survival during hypoxia - ATP-sensitive K+ channels, G.G. Haddad and C. Jiang; brain stem chemosensitivity - its implication in central respiratory regulation, M.P. Mor-in-Surun et al; maturation of brain stem neurons involved in respiratory rhythmogenesis - biochemical, bioelectrical and morphological properties, M. Denavit-Saubie et al; possible involvement of serotonin in obstructive apnea of the new-born, D. Morin et al; maturation of fetal breathing activity, C.E. Blanco; studies of neuroregulators in the brain stem of SIDS, N. Kopp et al; a perspective on neuropathologic findings in victims of the sudden infant death syndrome - the triple-risk model, J.J. Filiano and H.C. Kinney; ventilatory strategy in hypoxic or hypercapnic newborns, M. Bonora et al; pulmonary reflexes and control of breathing during development, T. Trippenbach; epidemiology and pathophysiology of apnoea of prematurity, C.F. Poets et al; cerebral blood flow and metabolism during repeated asphyxias in newborn piglets - influence of theophylline, J.M. Goplerud and M. Delivoria-Papadopoulos; apnea and sleep state in newborns and infants, C. Gaultier; mechanisms of obstructive sleep apneas in infants, A. Kahn et al; cardiac and respiratory reactivity to gastroesophageal reflux - experimental data in infants, J. Ramet; modifications of ventilatory reflexes - an efficient therapy for apneas of prematurity?, P. Monin; drug-induced apnea, M.-J. Boutroy; effects of respiratory stimulants on cerebral metabolism and blood flow, A. Nehlig; diaphragm pacing - clinical and experimental results, R.T. Brouillette and M. Marzocchi; work-shop - definition and criteria for classification of lesions observed in sudden infant death syndrome for further research on the central nervous system - proposal for a consensus, D. Jordan and N. Kopp.
