About the Book

"River Basin Management IV" is the fourth of a successful series of international conferences. It took place on the Greek island of Kos, birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of Medicine. The papers presented there, are included in this volume. River basin management is a complex and interdisciplinary issue. It essentially includes river and groundwater flows, quantity and quality of water resources, water and soil interaction, droughts and floods; all these, in a frame of increasing and competing human demands, deterioration of natural resources, climate change, changing public views, attitudes and awareness of environmental problems, new national and international legislation and ever increasing scientific knowledge. The complexity of river basin management is reflected in the content of this volume. It includes papers on: water resources management, river and watershed management, hydraulics and hydrology, hydrological modelling, flood studies, sediment transport, stream bank erosion & protection measures, Ecological & environmental impacts and water quality issues.

Table of Contents:
Section 1: Water resources management Seawater intrusion into the aquifer of Eleftherae-N. Peramos, Kavala, Greece; The use of modelling to implement the Water Framework Directive; Informational cognitive model applied to the water resources management; Stochastic optimization of multi-reservoir systems with power plants and spillways; Developing communities and water resources management; A cross-sectional analysis of Brazil's effluent discharge regulation; An integrated approach for the assessment of water availability for irrigation in semi-arid regions Section 2: River and watershed management MODCEL: an integrated cell model for river basin simulation; Optimal rule curves for interconnected reservoirs; Guidelines and tools to design and manage properly dam-reservoir systems; Guidelines for the choosing of river interventions considering environmental, archaeological and landscaping constraints; Attitudes of residents in the Tokyo Bay area toward flood hazards; Remedial works against debris flows after floods in the State of Vargas, Venezuela Section 3: Hydraulics and hydrology The effect of buildings in floodplain overbank areas; The hydrologic and hydraulic study of the behaviour of the Nyl River floodplain Section 4: Hydrological modelling Estimation of monthly stream flows based on the sequential water budget technique applied to the Thornthwaite potential evapotranspiration; Using a neural network model to forecast flood events on the Big Thompson River; Genetic algorithm applied to the calibration of a rainfall-infiltration-runoff model; Application of the MSB pollution-flushing model to Great Salt Pond on Block Island Section 5: Flood studies Flood forecast based on numerical weather prediction and distributed runoff model; Risk flood areas, a study case: Basilicata Region; Numerical hydrological and hydraulic simulation of the effects of a possible flood wave as part of a risk analysis and risk management at the Suggadinbach; An aid in the most accurate rainfall thresholds evaluation; Environmental control of torrents environment: one valorisation for prevention of water flood disasters; Flood risk management in French Mediterranean basins; Mitigation of flood hazards in Japan; Natural hazard management BUWELA; Real-time environmental information for the public and public safety organisations in case of flood events; Flood risk in the UK: current and future; The restoration in the torrent Los Meses, Spain Section 6: Sediment transport Effects of topographic data resolution and spatial model resolution on a bi-dimensional hydro-morphological model; Velocity and suspended sediment concentration profiles in rivers: in situ measurements and flux modelling; Development of the prediction method of the sediment yield from fault rocks; Rheometry of silts of Fodda Wadi dam in relation to their transport and their valorization Section 7: Stream bank erosion and protection measures Three-dimensional flow in a barb field; River bed deformations near banks and hydraulic structures due to river flow; Hydraulics of bendway weirs Section 8: Ecological and environmental impacts Ecocide and genocide in the Iraqi Marshlands; Landscape factors of nutrient transport in temperate agricultural catchments; Focus on environmental assessment needs for water resources development projects in India; Environmental impact assessment in the Apure River; Monitoring river pollution with high-resolution satellite images; A hydrological model to evaluate environmental impacts due to extensive irrigation.
