About the Book

The Fifth International Conference on River Basin Management presents recent advances in the overall management of riverine systems, including advances in hydraulic and hydrological modelling, ecology, environmental management and flood forecasting. In recent years, significant advances have been made in the development and application of software tools for predicting flow, water quality, sediment transport and ecological processes in riverine systems. The conference is thus the ideal forum for practitioners and academia to highlight the latest developments in this field and to discuss the experience of applying such tools to practical riverine problems. The papers presented at the Conference, published in this book, include all aspects of Hydrology, Ecology, Environmental Management, Flood Plains and Wetlands. Papers are grouped into the following topics: Watershed and Water Resources Management; Flood Studies and Debris Flow; Ecological and Environmental Impact; Erosion and Sediment Transport; River Restoration and Rehabilitation; Case Studies; Policy and Governance.

Table of Contents:
Section 1: Watershed and water resources management A waterways management framework for Western Australia; Preliminary flood risk assessment in the Hornad watershed; Rainfall trend analysis of Sydney's drinking water catchments; The 2000 EU water framework directive and Chinese water management: experiences and perspectives; Dynamics of concentrations of total organic carbon in Estonian streams, 1992-2007; Impacts of hydrology and hydropower on water quality in reservoir tailwaters Section 2: Flood studies and debris flow Development and restoration of the urban rivers: examples from old downtown Tokyo, Japan; Continuous formulation for bottom friction in free surface flows modelling; Alternatives in flood protection: the effect of decentralized measures in the Upper Floha watershed (Southeastern Germany); GIS analysis of flood damage using Google Earth; Coupling hydrological-hydraulic models for extreme flood simulating and forecasting on the North Central Coast of Vietnam; 1-D finite volume model for dam-break induced mud-flow; Two-dimensional numerical models for overland flow simulations; Minimization of the conflict between electric power generation and flood control of the Brazilian reservoirs operation planning; Debris flow hazards due to land use changes above source areas in torrent catchments: case study of Les Arcs (Savoie, France) Section 3: Ecological and environmental impact A natural laboratory for small estuary studies: the reincarnation of Town Pond; Trends in hydrologic time series; Environmental management of riparian tree health in the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia; Overview of the complex and modular system FLOREON+ for hydrologic and environmental modeling; Vulnerability to climate change and water management: hydropower generation in Brazil Section 4: Erosion and sediment transport Design considerations related to the performance of erosion control systems combined with soil bioengineering techniques; An ecological approach for estimating turbidity in a river; Preliminary experimental tests of local erosion at river piers with a particular shape; The suspended load in the water-storage reservoir of the hydroelectric power plant Bostanj on the Sava River; Application of GIS tools for Leca River Basin soil erosion (Northern Portugal) evaluation Section 5: River restoration and rehabilitation Design of stream barbs for field scale application at Sawmill Creek, Ottawa; The restoration of some stretches of the Sarno River (Southern Italy): from canalized environment to fluvial corridor; Hydraulics of stream deflectors used in fish-habitat restoration schemes; Establishing priorities for the management and restoration of river basins with opencast coal mines Section 6: Case studies Infiltration tests at the landsliding of the right bank of the "Juan de Grijalva" River, Chiapas, Mexico; Mitigation of estuarine eutrophication processes by controlling freshwater inflows; River network of young glacial areas and its fractal dimension; Application of geophysical monitoring system and GIH 01 tool at the river basin scale as a part of integrated water resources management in the Czech Republic Section 7: Policy and governance Shared waters: from global principles to regional agreements; Progress in implementing the Water Framework Directive in the UK - barriers and opportunities
