About the Book

This first volume provides the basic matters needed for understanding the thermophysical properties of metallic liquids and for developing reliable models to accurately predict the thermophysical properties of almost all metallic elements in the liquid state, together with methods for quantitative assessment of models/equations. The authors also review the structure of metallic liquids, which is based on the theory of liquids, followed by density, volume expansivity, thermodynamic properties (evaporation enthalpy, vapour pressure, heat capacity), sound velocity, surface tension, viscosity, diffusion, and electrical and thermal conductivities. Finally, the essential points of methods used for measuring these experimental data are presented.

Table of Contents:
1: An Introductory Description of Metallic Liquids 2: Structure and Pair Potential Energy 3: Density 4: Thermodynamic Properties 5: Velocity of Sound 6: Surface Tension 7: Viscosity 8: Diffusion 9: Electrical and Thermal Conductivity

About the Author :
Takamichi Iida is the professor Emeritus of Materials Science and Processing at Osaka University. He obtained a Doctorate in Materials Science, studying the physical properties of metallic liquids. On the basis of the metrology of liquids, he also co-developed a viscometer for characterizing slag viscosities in continuous casting machines for the Japanese steel industry. He is the author, or co-author, of more than 200 research papers. He was awarded the Meritorious Honor Prize (in 1982), and the Okada Science and Technology Prize (in 2002). Roderick I.L.Guthrie is the Macdonald Professor of Metallurgy at McGill University, and is the Director and co-founder of the McGill Metals Processing Centre, established in 1990. He is the author, or co-author, of more than 450 publications, twenty four receiving best paper awards, and has about 240 patents from 12 inventions attributed to him. He is an Honorary Member of the AIME and of the Iron and Steel Institute of Japan, a Distinguished Member of the AIST, is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, of the Canadian Academy of Engineers, and of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. He remains a very active member of the research community in North America, specialising in Fluid Dynamics and associated Heat and Mass Transfer in Liquid Metal Processing Operations.

Review :
This work, authored by the two leading experts in the field, forms an outstanding source of information on liquid metals creating an essential reference for any group involved with this important area. The authors are to be congratulated in assembling so much pertinent information, in a very readable form, from the fundamental aspects, including a comprehensive source of data, to the prediction of thermophysical properties - it is an outstanding achievement. The latest book on Thermophysical Properties of Metallic Liquids by Professor Iida and Professor Guthrie is an extremely important tool in enhancing our knowledge in the area of Materials Process Science. The book consists of two volumes, presenting the physics of thermophysical properties in the first and predictive models for estimating these properties in the second. Volume 1 takes the reader from the atomic level to macro region correlating structure with properties, providing a fundamental understanding. Volume 2 is a boon to the engineers in the choice of reliable data and models where needed. Authored by two authorities in this area, these volumes would occupy a central position in my book shelf. The book should be available in all the libraries and be accessible to all researchers in the area of Materials Process Science, in academia as well as in industry. The books cover static and dynamic thermophysical properties of metallic liquids. Atomic periodicity is a strong lead throughout the description, compilation, and modeling of different properties. The books are very useful for students, researchers, and engineers of materials science and engineering. They greatly help to understand the relations between atomic scale and macroscopic process phenomena.
