Excerpt: This article is about an NPC in Ultima Ultima Underworld II. For the NPC in Ultima IX, see Altara (U9). Altara is a sorceress on Killorn Keep fighting against the Guardian in secret. Prior to the Avatar meeting her, she, along with others, had tried to initiate reforms on Killorn Keep's world. However, the Guardian's agents crushed them mercilessly and many were executed. Some seen as too useful, like Altara, were spared and punished by being sent to places that were dead ends for their careers. Altara was sent to Killorn Keep. The Avatar was told by Bishop to find Altara in Killorn Keep in Ultima Underworld II. Telling her Bishop's name, she first wanted the Avatar to kill the Listener, a spy-creature of the Guardian in Britannia. Having done this, Altara showed the Avatar her plan for a device to cut the Guardian's lines of power: Altara's Scepter. She had an altered Black Pearl, but needed more materials to create it. The Avatar brought Altara the egg of a Dread Spider and an Amethyst Rod, so that she could create the Scepter.
