Germanium, Ge (163?); anew element found in argyrodite; its acidulated solution gives with H2S a white sulphide, which dissolves readily in NH4OH or in (NH4S. It forms a white oxide, not volatile at red heat, soluble in KOH. Its chloride is white and volatile. The free element has a gray color, metallic lustre and at bright red heat sublimes in crystals, resembling iodine. As it forms the only white sulphide precipitated from acid solution, at present known, and as its reactions closely resemble those of members of the arsenic group, it deserves careful attention, in spite of its rare occurrence.
