About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1886 Excerpt: ...by HCl or by HNOs yield to protracted heating with moderately concentrated sulphuric acid. 112. Silicates not decomposed by acids. a. Separation of SiO2. The finely powdered substance is mixed with its fourfold weight of anhydrous NaCOs and fused in a platinum crucible over a powerful lamp until the mass becomes thoroughly fluxed and flows quietly. (On a small scale this operation may be performed before the blowpipe on a piece of platinum foil bent into a somewhat hollow shape). The fluxed mass is treated with HCl, the acid liquid evaporated to dryness, without previous filtering, and the dry residue heated with some concentrated HCl, to convert insoluble oxychlorides, formed during the evaporation, into soluble chlorides. Water is now added and after boiling silica is separated by filtration, and the bases detected in filtrate. 113. b. Detection of the alkalies. In a platinum crucible an intimate mixture is made of 1 part of the powdered silicate and 5 parts of pure CaF2, with enough concentrated H2SO4 to form a paste. The mixture is heated very slowly and gradually until all excess of H2SCXj is expelled. The dry mass is repeatedly boiled out with water; from the filtered solution sulphuric acid is removed by BaCl2 and without filtering sufficient milk of lime (Ca(OH)2 mixed with water to a thin paste) is added to alkaline reaction. The mixture is boiled, filtered, barium and calcium precipitated, as carbonates, by NHjOH and (NHjCOs and the alkalies detected as directed in 1 and ff. 114. Fluorine. Silicates containing F, when treated with concentrated sulphuric acid, evolve SiF.i, which does not corrode glass. Bat if a glass rod, to which a drop of water adheres, is held over the mixture evolving the gas, the water beeomes coat...
