About the Book

Everything in the universe is made of matter. Matter is made of tiny objects called atoms. There are many types of atoms. When atoms of the same type combine, the result is an element. Some elements, like silver and oxygen, are found in nature. Others are man-made. When combined, elements can form new substances. For more information on elements, read Antoine Lavoisier: Founder of Modern Chemistry, another book in the Mission: Science series.

Review :
Cregan discusses the structure of the atom, key scientists, cathode rays and electrons, radioactivity, and atom smashers. Lee describes the difference between plant and animal cells, and their contents; diffusion; and cell storage, movement, and reproduction. Van Gorp provides an overview of matter and the elements and how the latter combine to form compounds; ionic and covalent bonds; the periodic table of the elements; reactions; and mixtures and solutions. The books have open layouts and large, easy-to-read type. Boxed areas highlight key topics and individuals, and "Did You Know?" bubbles offer additional facts. Large eye-catching and colorful photographs and illustrations appear on every page. Each of the books includes a simple activity. For example, Cells provides instructions for using two magnifying glasses and a newspaper to create a light microscope, and Elements provides instructions for combining compounds to create a bouncy ball.-- "School Library Journal" Part of the "Mission: Science" series, this book starts out with matter. "You and this book have something important in common," Van Gorp writes. "You might not think you are like the book at all. After all, you are a living thing, and the book is not. But you and the book are both made of matter." Once Van Gorp has defined matter, she moves on to tell us what matter is made of--the elements of course. These elements combine to form compounds, they are organized on the periodic table, they have symbols and they react. Each section is illustrated with stunning photos and well-developed drawings. What this book does particularly well is take the abstract concept of representational chemistry and make it accessible. Sidebars and captions in the text describe the history of discovery. A fairly easy read for mid-graders, the book should fit in well with the new science standards that ask the students to explore more science on their own. Backmatter includes a science activity, glossary, timeline, additional resources and index.-- "Children's Literature"
