About the Book

Born in 1822, Gregor Mendel grew up enjoying gardening and biology. His experiments with garden peas helped him explain how genetic traits in living things, such as hair color and eye color in humans are passed from generation to generation. For more information on genetics, read The World of Genetics, another book in the Mission: Science series.

Review :
The "Mission: Science" series covers core science topics as well as individual and collective biographies of scientists. For extra depth, volumes of each can be paired. Colorful pages contain illustrations, text in various fonts, and sidebars or "Did You Know?" balloons. In this volume, readers will meet Gregor Mendel (1822--1884), who didn't start out to be a scientist. The son of a poor Austrian family, Mendel had to take what education was available: beginning as a gardener, he studied at a monastery and later, for a short time, in Vienna. (Kids may find it interesting that young Mendel, though very bright, had severe test anxiety.) Back at the monastery, Gregor devoted himself to studying how seven characteristics of pea plants are passed down through many generations (shown with a chart). Keeping painstakingly careful records, Mendel was able to identify dominant and recessive traits; eventually, he published his results. Sadly, little attention was paid to his work until well after his death, when Mendel was finally recognized as contributing to the understanding of genes in heredity. Young scientists will probably enjoy the pages on inherited human traits like eye color, freckles, hair characteristics, and tongue-rolling. Finally, the text introduces later geneticists Hugo de Vries and Barbara McClintock, who built on Mendel's work. Included are a glossary, a short bibliography, a timeline of genetics, and a list of other scientists who have worked with genes and chromosomes. Content has been contributed by Sally Ride Science.-- "Children's Literature"
