John G PetersJohn G. Peters, president emeritus of Northern Illinois University, served as the 11th president from June 2000 to June 2013. As NIU's chief executive officer, Peters provided strategic direction and oversight for a nationally recognized, comprehensie university serving more than 23,000 students in 120 areas of study at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Under his leadership, NIU expanded and refined its institutional vision to more closely align teaching, research, and outreach efforts with the emerging needs of the northern Illinois region. He is nationally recognized for his leadership in the face of crisis, having led NIU's response and recovery following a tragic February 14, 2008, shooting on campus. In 2009, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) honored NIU with the Silver Anvil Award for the university's crisis communications response.
