Denys TeareDenys Teare (1922-2015) was a Manx airman and author best known for his book Evader. He served as part of a Lancaster bomber crew, and in 1944, following the crash landing of the aircraft "S for Sugar" on a return flight from a raid over Germany, he found himself stranded in occupied France. Remarkably, the entire crew survived the crash, though they didn't reunite until after the war. Teare spent over a year living in France - including his 22nd birthday - during which he learned French, helped local farmers with the harvest, and assisted the French resistance, before eventually linking up with the American 3rd Army as they advanced through the region. His memoir Evader, recounting these experiences, was first published in 1954 and remains in print today through Crecy Publishing. In early 2015, in recognition of his wartime service and role in the liberation of France, the French government awarded him the Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur.
