About the Book

On the 5th September 1943, Denys Teare baled out of his burning Lancaster bomber seconds before it crashed into a hillside in Occupied France. For the next twelve months Teare was a wanted man - an evader in the midst of the enemy. Teare's story is an outstanding picture of life in France under the Nazis, of the danger and the horror before the liberation, and of what liberation really meant when at last it came. This is not just the story of those who fought and survived, it is also the story of those who were not so lucky, and does not shy away from the often harrowing fate of innocent civilians caught-up in the madness of war and enemy occupation. Evader is one of the most remarkable stories ever to come out of the Second World War and has its place amongst the modern-day tales of living, fighting and evading behind enemy lines.

About the Author :
Denys Teare (1922-2015) was a Manx airman and author best known for his book Evader. He served as part of a Lancaster bomber crew, and in 1944, following the crash landing of the aircraft "S for Sugar" on a return flight from a raid over Germany, he found himself stranded in occupied France. Remarkably, the entire crew survived the crash, though they didn't reunite until after the war. Teare spent over a year living in France - including his 22nd birthday - during which he learned French, helped local farmers with the harvest, and assisted the French resistance, before eventually linking up with the American 3rd Army as they advanced through the region. His memoir Evader, recounting these experiences, was first published in 1954 and remains in print today through Crecy Publishing. In early 2015, in recognition of his wartime service and role in the liberation of France, the French government awarded him the Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur. Denys Teare passed away peacefully at Ramsey Cottage Hospital on the Isle of Man on 1 December 2015, at the age of 93.

Review :
Evader provides a vivid picture of the French Resistance. One perspires freely whilst reading the simple facts which betray the courage of his story.
