Annick Sanjurjo

Annick SanjurjoAnnick Sanjurjo was born in Asuncion, Paraguay and graduated from the National University of Paraguay where she was later a professor for several years. Since 1975, she lives in the United States and is dedicated to the study of the Latin American ars and also to the crafts of her native country. During her relatively short stay in New York, she participated in the preparation of a traveling exhibit, Lines of Vision: One Hundred Latin American Drawings, which was successfully exhibited in several United States cities under the auspices of the International Exhibitions Foundation. She also wrote a critical essay of the works exhibited and related them to the reality and culture of Latin America and also produced a media presentation. After moving to the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area where she presently resides, she assumed several positions at the Organization of America States and worked at the Archives of its Museum of Latin American Art. She participated in the production of the first catalog of the Museum's permanent collection and also curated the exhibit Latin American Masters in the Private Collections of the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Area. Her position allowed her, independently, to create an exhaustive recompilation of the exhibitions held at the OAS since 1940 until 1986. Her work is published in two volumes and includes, for the first time in English, information on over 2,000 Latin American artists with a complete list of all the works exhibited in each show. Also independently, Annick Sanjurjo published critical essays and produced several media presentations about some of the most recognized Latin America Artists, such as Rufino Tamayo, Fernando Botero, Eduardo MacEntyre, Fernando De Szyszlo, José Luis Cuevas, Ana Maria Pacheco, among others. Ñanduti, Lace of Paraguay is evidence of her constant interest in the cultural expressions of her native country since it is an addition to previous works, such as the multimedia presentation, now issued in DVD format, of a short story by Gabriel Casaccia, Howl, (El guajhú); a documentary film on ñanduti lace produced during the 1970's (included in the second edition of the bookd as a DVD); and several conferences and media presentations on art and crafts that include such artists as Ignacio Núñez Soler, Carlos Colombino and Enrique Careaga. With this work, Annick Sanjurjo, in a clear and concise style, offers an important document about an undoubtedly unique Paraguayan craft and adds an important chapter to the written history of Paraguay.
