About the Book

This book contains papers presented at the Thirty Fourth International Conference on Boundary Elements and other Mesh Reduction Methods (BEM/MRM), recognised as the international forum for the latest advances of these methods and their applications in science and engineering. The success of the meeting, since the first conference took place in Southampton, UK, in 1978, is an indication of the strength of the research being carried out by many different groups around the world. This continuous growth is a result of the evolution of the techniques from methods based on classical integral equations to techniques now covering a wide variety of mathematical approaches, the main objective of which is to reduce or eliminate the mesh. The mesh, a concept inherited from more primitive methods, such as finite differences and finite elements, is alien to the solution of the problem and dictated only by the limitations of first generation analysis techniques. Topics covered include: Advanced meshless and mesh reduction methods; Advanced formulations; Fluid Flow; Acoustics; Electrical engineering and electromagnetic; Emerging applications.

Table of Contents:
Contents Section 1: Advanced meshless and mesh reduction methods Modeling strain localisation in a segmented bar by a C2-continuous two-node integrated-RBF element formulation; Meshless implementations of Local Integral Equations for bending of thin plates; Local regular dual reciprocity method for 2D convection-diffusion equation; MFS-based solution to two-dimensional linear thermoelasticity problems; A meshless method based on Taylor series; Imposing the boundary conditions in the LBIE/RBF method: a simplified approach; Meshless solution of 2D and 3D Stokes flow using the radial basis integral equation method; Free and forced vibrations of shell structures interacting with liquid; Gaussian RBF-FD weights and its corresponding local truncation errors; A coupling strategy between the BEM and Kansa's method for acoustic analysis of heterogeneous media Section 2: Advanced formulations A study on topology optimization using the level-set function and BEM; A least square solution applied to plate analyses using the traction boundary integral equation; A boundary element approach to buckling of general laminates; Dynamic simulation of heat conduction using a BEM model in the frequency domain: an experimental validation Section 3: Fluid flow Simulation of ferrofluids by BEM; Residual-free bubble shape functions used in BEM for the stability of the solution of the convective-diffusion transport equation; Boundary element analysis of deformation and movement of a capsule and a red blood cell close to the wall; Boundary element analysis of the multi-capsule flow using an ultra-high speed GPGPU computation; The adaptive cross approximation accelerated boundary element method for bubble dynamics; Solution of two-dimensional flow in unsaturated media with electrolytic tank; A meshless method solution approach for the transient poro-elastic levee problem Section 4: Acoustics Sound pressure attenuation provided by a 3D rigid acoustic barrier on a building facade: the influence of its longitudinal shape; Dispersion analysis of the meshless local boundary integral equation (LBIE) method for the Helmholtz equation; Using a Dual-BEM formulation to model the sound pressure wavefield provided by absorbing thin screens attached to the walls of a duct; 3D acoustic simulation inside closed rooms bounded by non-parallel floor and ceiling surfaces Section 5: Electrical engineering and electromagnetics On the use of isoparametric elements for BEM modeling of arbitrarily shaped thin wires in electromagnetic compatibility applications; Calculation of the protective current density distribution of a cathodic protection system with galvanic anodes in terms of double-layer electrolyte Section 6: Emerging applications BEM and FEM simulations of the vibro-acoustical response of finite noise barriers; An introduction to MLn BiCGStab
