I was just 24 years old when it broke on the evening radio and tv news stations. It didn't sink in till it was boldly stated in the Detroit Free Press headlines of August 1st, 1975. Jimmy Hoffa has been missing since July 30, 1975. The events sent shock waves through organized labor, law enforcement, and the American public. It wasn't just Detroiters, but the entire country and world that was stunned by the news. I had not heard the news until my parents returned home on August 1st. They immediately flipped on the television with the news already in progress. My mother and father, Kenneth and Frances Tubman, were puffing away on their Pall Malls, and Mom was sitting expectantly on the front edge of the easy chair. Dad was nervously standing close to the TV set. I sat on the couch nearby. I saw the terror on their faces as we listened in. The newscaster had just said: "Jimmy Hoffa was last seen at the Machus Red Fox in Bloomfield Township." As soon as the announcer finished that sentence, my father quipped: "Like Hell!-We saw him at the Raleigh House!"
