Review :
Planning for Teaching Success offers an impressively comprehensive collection of practical strategies for curriculum planning, formative and summative assessment, and teaching. The students of teachers who implement even a fraction of these recommended strategies will benefit from more engaged and enduring learning. As I read Planning for Teaching Success,I thought of my father’s workshop where he passed along to me a lifetime of wisdom about how to do certain things and the importance of doing them well. In this latest installment in the Building Your Teaching Toolbox series, exemplary teachers offer their best tools, and guidance in how to use them, to solve the problems teachers grapple with daily. We often speak of the importance of ‘thinking outside the box,’ but the beauty and brilliance of this book is that Davis and Connolly help teachers think inside the box of their own classroom and constraints of time that challenge all teachers who want to teach for success, their students’ and their own. Planning for Teaching Success is an invaluable resource for educators at all levels, offering a wealth of actionable insights and strategies. The book seamlessly blends theory with real-world application, equipping educators with the tools to be successful and increase learning outcomes. Each chapter is packed with practical tips and evidence-based strategies that are both easy to implement and highly effective. This is a read you will not regret! Grounded in the work of Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, this book is full of useful tips for putting ideas into practice, and adapting to different classrooms and needs. A great guidebook for rookie teachers, it also includes good insights for experienced teachers. Building Your Teaching Toolbox is such a great name for this series. I wish I had this Toolbox when I first started teaching and am so happy I have it now. The structure of Planning for Teaching Success has a natural flow and makes veteran teachers more reflective in their practice while laying a strong foundation for newer teachers. It also empowers educators to encourage and support student curiosity. This book is a hitchhiker's guide of practical steps to building a classroom that grows in knowledge, skills, and student agency. You get what you put into your practice, and by using the book Planning for Teaching Success, educators will reap the rewards of their efforts. As an alternatively certified K-12 veteran educator, the 2019 Arkansas State Teacher of the Year, and a current professor of aspiring classroom practitioners, I am thrilled to endorse the Building Your Teaching Toolbox book series. This comprehensive collection, including Planning for Teaching Success, is an indispensable resource for educators at all stages of their careers. The metaphor of a teaching toolbox is brilliantly apt, capturing the essence of how educators continually gather, refine, and adapt strategies to meet the ever-evolving needs of their students. For new teachers, this series is a treasure trove of practical strategies to fill their newly minted toolboxes, offering them the guidance and confidence to navigate their early years in the profession. For seasoned educators, the series serves as a rejuvenating source of inspiration, providing fresh ideas and innovative approaches to reinvigorate well-worn tools and introduce new ones. The chapters in the book lay a strong foundation for effective teaching. Not only do they help teachers plan for inclusive, collaborative and relevant lessons in responsive learning environments, they also include strategies to help streamline, manage and access the teaching and learning process. The Building Your Teaching Toolbox series not only equips educators with a robust array of strategies for teaching students, it also fosters a sense of community among teachers. By sharing and learning from one another, we can collectively enhance our pedagogical practices and ultimately create more equitable and effective learning experiences for all students. I wholeheartedly recommend this series to any educator seeking to expand their toolkit and enrich their teaching practice. I am convinced that once you delve into this toolbox community, you’re going to eagerly look forward to adapting and swapping out these tools and strategies to fit and enhance your own classroom.
