About the Book

Okichitaw is a contemporary form of martial art that has its origins in the traditional approaches of battle that were utilized by the indigenous peoples of North America, specifically the Plains Cree indigenous people. In the latter part of the 20th century, Okichitaw was institutionalized, and since then, it has developed to encompass a combination of ancient techniques and contemporary martial arts principles. Sensei Doug B. McKenzie, who passed away in 1998, was the person responsible for its development. Key Features of Okichitaw: - Cultural Heritage: Okichitaw is steeped in the cultural and spiritual traditions of Indigenous peoples, emphasizing respect for one's heritage and the natural world. It aims to preserve and promote Indigenous knowledge and practices. - Techniques: The art includes various striking techniques, grappling, and weapon training. Techniques are often inspired by historical combat methods used by Indigenous warriors, including hand-to-hand combat and the use of traditional weapons like the knife, stick, and bow. - Training Philosophy: Okichitaw focuses on developing physical and mental strength, discipline, and respect for oneself and others. Practitioners learn to be aware of their surroundings and develop a strong connection to their cultural roots. - Classes and Curriculum: Training typically includes a mix of solo drills, partner exercises, and sparring. Classes may cover various aspects, such as self-defense, conditioning, and the history of Indigenous martial arts. - Community and Inclusivity: Okichitaw promotes inclusivity, welcoming practitioners from all backgrounds to learn and appreciate Indigenous culture. It aims to foster a sense of community and connection among its members. - Self-Defense: The techniques taught in Okichitaw emphasize practical self-defense skills that can be applied in real-life situations, making it relevant for modern practitioners. Okichitaw is not just a martial art but also a cultural expression that celebrates Indigenous heritage and philosophy. Its unique blend of techniques and values makes it a powerful practice for those looking to connect with their roots while developing physical and mental skills. Whether for self-defense, fitness, or cultural understanding, Okichitaw offers a rich and meaningful experience for its practitioners.
