About the Book

Overview of the Species Gargoyle geckos (Rhacodactylus auriculatus) are a species of gecko native to the island of New Caledonia, located in the South Pacific. They are part of the Rhacodactylus genus, which includes other popular pet geckos such as crested geckos and leachianus geckos. Gargoyle geckos are named for the bony, horn-like protrusions on their heads, which resemble the stone gargoyles seen in architecture. These cranial bumps give them a distinct and memorable appearance. Adult gargoyle geckos typically grow between 7 and 9 inches in length, including the tail, and weigh around 45 to 70 grams. They are long-lived reptiles, capable of living up to 15 to 20 years in captivity with proper care. Their coloration is highly variable and includes a wide range of morphs such as striped, blotched, and reticulated patterns in shades of red, orange, yellow, gray, brown, and white. This visual diversity has made them increasingly desirable in the reptile pet trade. Gargoyle geckos are semi-arboreal, meaning they are adapted to both climbing and ground-dwelling environments. They are nocturnal and most active during the evening and nighttime hours. Their calm temperament and ease of care have made them an appealing option for both beginner and experienced reptile keepers. Natural Habitat in New Caledonia In the wild, gargoyle geckos are found only in New Caledonia, an archipelago located off the eastern coast of Australia. Their primary habitat consists of humid, tropical forests, where they inhabit the mid-levels of vegetation, hiding among tree trunks, shrubs, and fallen logs. The environment in New Caledonia is characterized by moderate temperatures, high humidity, and dense vegetation-conditions that the gargoyle gecko has evolved to thrive in. These geckos are typically found in southern regions of the island, especially in low-elevation forests with limestone or volcanic rock substrates. The climate is relatively stable year-round, with average temperatures ranging between 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity often exceeding 60 to 80 percent. This natural background helps inform the ideal captive husbandry practices, including enclosure design, temperature regulation, and humidity control. Due to habitat destruction and pressure from introduced species, wild populations of gargoyle geckos are considered vulnerable. However, most geckos in the pet trade are now captive-bred, which reduces pressure on wild populations and ensures healthier animals for hobbyists. History of Captivity and Popularity as Pets Gargoyle geckos were first introduced into the exotic pet trade in the late 1990s and early 2000s, gaining popularity alongside crested geckos, which were rediscovered in the wild during the mid-1990s. Like crested geckos, gargoyle geckos were once thought to be rare and difficult to maintain, but advancements in reptile husbandry techniques have made them increasingly accessible and easier to care for. As breeding programs expanded, so did the availability of morphs and color patterns, which added to the species' appeal among collectors and enthusiasts. Their ability to thrive in captivity, tolerate handling, and display unique physical traits-such as cranial ridges, prehensile tails, and varied color morphs-have made them a favorite among reptile hobbyists around the world. Today, gargoyle geckos are commonly bred in captivity and are widely available through breeders, expos, and online reptile retailers. Their hardy nature, moderate care requirements, and captivating appearance make them a top choice for anyone looking to keep a visually striking and relatively low-maintenance pet reptile.
