About the Book

Natural History and Behavior The emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is the second-largest bird in the world by height, surpassed only by the ostrich. Native to Australia, emus are flightless, long-legged birds that belong to a group known as ratites, which also includes ostriches, cassowaries, rheas, and kiwis. Emus have evolved for survival in diverse and often harsh environments, ranging from grasslands to semi-arid deserts. Key natural traits: Size: Adult emus stand 5 to 6.5 feet tall and weigh between 90 to 120 pounds. Speed and agility: Emus can run up to 30 miles per hour and are surprisingly agile. Lifespan: In captivity, emus can live up to 20 years or more with proper care. Diet: Omnivorous; they consume a mix of plants, seeds, fruits, insects, and small animals. Temperament: Emus are generally curious and can become docile around humans, though individual temperament varies greatly. Emus are known for their strong social instincts. In the wild, they may travel in pairs or small groups, especially during breeding season or while searching for food and water. Though not aggressive by nature, they can become defensive or territorial if threatened. Why Emus Are Gaining Popularity as Pets In recent years, emus have attracted attention as unique and unconventional companion animals. Their distinctive appearance, docile behavior (when properly socialized), and relatively low maintenance requirements compared to other large livestock have contributed to this trend. Key reasons for their rising popularity: 1. Exotic Appeal: Emus stand out due to their size, prehistoric look, and unusual traits. Many people are fascinated by their dinosaur-like movements and expressions. 2. Low Feed Cost: Despite their size, emus are efficient feeders and consume less than one might expect. Their omnivorous diet allows for some flexibility in feeding. 3. Hardiness: Emus are hardy birds that adapt well to various climates and are generally resistant to disease, making them relatively easy to keep with basic veterinary support. 4. Egg Production and Value: Emu eggs are large, dark green, and can be used for cooking or sold for novelty, art, or hatching purposes. This adds an additional appeal to some owners. 5. Land Management: In rural areas, emus can help manage weeds and pests through natural browsing. 6. Companionship: When raised from chicks and regularly handled, emus can bond with humans and become friendly, engaging animals that enjoy interaction. It's important to note, however, that emus are not traditional pets and are best suited to owners with adequate space, resources, and a willingness to understand their complex needs.
