About the Book

This book is written by subject experts based on the latest research results on the characteristic line method of stress wave propagation in rock masses. It establishes a framework for stress wave propagation analysis methods under three levels of rocks, joints and rock masses. It introduces the two-characteristic line method for stress wave propagation in rocks, and further illustrates the modified characteristic line method for stress wave propagation in complex jointed rock masses. The split three-characteristic line method was proposed for stress wave propagation in rock masses with macro-joints and micro-defects. The book focuses on the basic theory, and highlights the ideas, methods and steps to solve the problem of stress wave propagation in rock masses. This book can be used as a reference book for researchers of research institutes engaged in analyzing, predicting and controlling dynamic stability in rock, geological, and mining engineering.

About the Author :

Lifeng FAN, professor and doctoral advisor of Beijing University of Technology. He was awarded the Young "Changjiang Scholar" of the Ministry of Education, the "Great Wall Scholar" of Beijing, the "Outstanding Youth Fund" of Beijing, and the high-level "Outstanding Talent" of Beijing University of Technology. In 2022, he was selected for the list of the top 2% of scientists released by Stanford University. His research interest includes rock dynamics and seismic wave propagation in the rock mass. Until now, he has published more than 100 SCI papers as the first or corresponding author and three monographs. The monograph "Theory and Analysis Method of Stress Wave Propagation in Jointed Fissures (Science Press)" was selected as one of the key publication projects of the National 13th Five-Year Plan and the series of "Research Works on Rock Mechanics and Engineering" of the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering. He won two first prizes of the provincial and ministerial natural science awards (ranking 2 and 3), one second prize and one third prize of scientific and technological progress awards (ranking 6 and 4) and five social power awards. He served as the director of the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering and the vice chairman of the National Special Committee for Discontinuous Analysis of Rock and Soil Mass. He is a member of the China Special Committee on Rock Dynamics, the China Special Committee on Rock Crushing Engineering, and the China Special Committee on Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Education. He also serves as the editorial board (youth) and the guest editorial board of 7 journals, such as JRMGE, BOEG, JZUAS, TUST, Journal of Applied Mechanics, Journal of Beijing University of Technology and Bulletin of Civil Engineering.

Meng WANG, PhD, graduated from Beijing University of Technology. Master's supervisor at Shijiazhuang Tiedao University. She has received the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertationof Beijing University of Technology, the National Scholarship for Doctoral Candidates, the Doctoral Innovation Scholarship of Beijing University of Technology, and the "Star of Science and Technology" Nomination Award of Beijing University of Technology. She is mainly engaged in the analysis of stress wave propagation properties in rock masses. She published 10 SCI papers in the mainstream journal of rock mechanics (Int J Rock Mech Min\Rock Mech Rock Eng, etc.). She has participated in several projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and has made academic reports at international/domestic academic conferences many times.
