In Opgave van het proza onderneemt Dirk De Schutter een poging om een ethiek van het lezen te articuleren. Het uitgangspunt voor deze ethiek vormen Hegels esthetica en Heideggers interpretatie van Hölderlin. Zowel Hegels Vorlesungen über die Ästhetik als Heideggers Erläuterungen zu Hölderlins Dichtung worden aan een minutieuze lectuur onderworpen: speciale aandacht wordt besteed aan Hegels behandeling van het sublieme van de allegorie, van de ironie en van het proza, maar ook aan Heideggers transformatie van de hertmeneutische cirkel. Hegel kondigt het einde van de kunst af en laat de kunst overgaan in het proza van het denken. De vraag rijst wat de verhouding is tussen het speculatieve en het literaire proza en tussen "aufheben" en lezen. Heidegger zoekt in de act van het interpreteren naar een beweging van eigenlijkheid die niet alleen voor de lezer maar ook voor de tekst constitutief zou zijn. Tenslotte lijkt het lezen zowel voor Hegel als voor Heidegger een soort knieval te impliceren. In dit boek gaat Dirk De Schutter na wat dit knielen kan betekenen en hoe het ingaat op de wet die het lezen oplegt.
