Uittreksel: ...de geul der straat. Als door een zwaar loopende, drabbige rivier opgestooten en meegevoerd, voelde hij zich gaan. Hij zag voor zich niets dan ruggen, zwarte, benauwde, stomme ruggen. Soms was het of de zwarte rivier rondwentelde in de smalle bedding der straat; dan smeet de stroom hem rechts tegen de huizen aan en hij voelde zich opgaan in het gedonder van lawaai-makende menschen, en dan weer links, waar hij tegen een anderen menschenstroom aankwam die teruggolfde. Dan zag hij een oogenblik zoo'n stoet voorbijgaan; 't waren krachtige mannen en opgeschoten jongens, allen met oranjestrikjes op de borst, of tusschen het lint van den in den nek gezakten hoed; er waren veel vrouwen bij, opgedrild met omslagdoeken of burgerlijke mantels. Ze hiha-den met de mannen mee. Een oogenblik zag hij ze in de dronken en bevlamde gezichten, ze waren vertrokken en misvormd door de opwinding, vuile zweetstralen daalden onder de hoeden vandaan, de haren plekten en kleefden en waren in de war, de oogen glommen wellustig, de monden waren opengeschreeuwd tot donkere gaten. Met geluiden van verschrikking gingen ze voorbij. Hi! ha! dreunden de zweetende mannen, ze hielden de vrouwen aan de gebogen armen en stieten elkaar in de ruggen op. Hi! ha! hijgden ze als moesten hun longen te bersten, voort donderden ze, stampend daverden hun voeten op het asfalt en ze sloegen een bres in het gedrang, op den hamerenden rythmus van hun wild gezang. Maar oogenblikkelijk rolde de bedding weer vol en sloot de stroom zich toe. Kalmer ging het nu voorbij, de opwandelende beweging kabbelde rustig vooruit. 't Waren rustige wandelstoeten, tevreden menschen elkaar verdringend, huisgezinnen opgepropt achter elkaar. Ze schoven vooruit op een luchtig danspasje. vroolijk zagen hun oogen en alles bewonderend, in de rooskleurige gezichten. En ze waren allen met oranje versierd, met geplooide rosetjes of met geverfde immortellenboeketjes. Sommigen hadden van tin gegoten medaljes aan een geel...
