About the Book

Muscle fatigue is of central importance in exercise physiology, but the mechanisms and causes of fatigue are still not fully understood. This volume provides recent information on the complex subject of skeletal muscle fatigue. Emphasis is placed on fundamental data concerning the mechanisms involved in fatigue. The contributions include various experimental models ranging from isolated muscle fibre to the whole body. Attention is also given to alternative hypotheses of the more classical theories about local fatigue. The book should benefit a variety of experts interested in physical activity and muscle fatigue, from sports scientists and physicians to athletes, sports administrators and reporters.

Table of Contents:
ATP-dependent K+ channels and other K+ channels of muscle - how exercise may modulate their activity, N.W. Davies; regulation of Ca2+ release from skeletal muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum, A. Hermann-Frank and G. Meissner; the contractile performance of normal and fatigued skeletal muscle, K.A.P. Edman; fatigue mechanisms in isolated intact muscle fibres from frog and mouse, J. Lannergren; role of amino acids and ammonia in mechanisms of fatigue, A.J.M. Wagenmakers; metabolism and performance in exhaustive intense exercise - different effects of muscle glycogen availability, previous exercise and muscle acidity, B. Saltin et al; increased metabolic rate associated with muscle fatigue, O.M. Sejersted and N.K. Vollestad; damage to skeletal muscle during exercise - relative roles of free radicals and other processes, M.J. Jackson; impaired lactate exchange and removal abilities after supramaximal exercise in humans, S. Oyono-Enguelle et al; do muscle sensory receptors compensate for or contribute to neuromuscular fatigue?, R.S. Hutton et al; neuromuscular fatigue during repeated stretch-shortening cycle exercises, P.V. Komi et al; heart muscle metabolism and function during heavy exercise, L. Kaijser; exogenous substrate utilization during prolonged exercise - studies with 13C-labelling, F. Peronnet et al; heat stress causes fatigue - exercise performance during acute and repeated exposures to hot, dry environments, B. Nielsen; circadian rhythms in muscular activity, T. Reilly.
