Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled 'The effect of mental training in delaying muscle fatigue' Submitted by Wu Cheng Kam Chee, Polina for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in December, 2000 The present study investigated the influence of in vivo motivational imagery on enhancing muscular endurance. Ten athletes randomly assigned to experimental group and ten to control group. Each subject performed 60 maximal voluntary knee extensions in an isokinetic device, repeated four times in the course of one month. The set total work output of the two trials before and after treatment was computed and compared in an attempt to find out any effect on delaying muscle fatigue between the control and experimental group. The experimental group was taught and practiced imagery four times as treatment. Skin conductance level of the subject was monitored throughout the imagery treatment. The control group did only irrelevant task and self-evaluation of imagery ability (Test of Sport Imagery). Blood samples were taken from each subject before and after the 60 knee extensions to monitor the effort output of each exercise through the subject's lactate level. T-tests showed no significant differences in the physical ability, lactate level and imagery ability at baseline measure. ANOVA showed that there were main effects over time for both groups in three endurance factors, the set total work output, 50% fatigue work and 50% fatigue time. ANOVA also showed significant differences in the imagery group in two sub-scales of self-evaluated imagery ability (Test of Sport Imagery), auditory and control. The post-test value of auditory and total subjective imagery ability showed positive correlation with one muscular endurance factor, Peak Torque. Furthermore, simple regression analysis revealed auditory imagery ability as strong predictor of Peak Torque. Independent t-test showed no significant difference in the experimental subjects' objective measurement of imagery ability after training indicated by their change in skin conductance level. The findings do not support Feltz & Riessinger's (1990) study that imagery is effective in increasing one's sense of perceived efficacy to endure muscular isometric performance. It is speculated that the reason was that the competitive nature of the subjects used for this study motivated them to perform better in every test regardless of imagery condition. Further research is necessary to examine what mental strategy can affect muscular performance and extend the duration of endurance.
