About the Book

This is a report of a longitudinal study of multiple birth children including quintuplets, quadruplets and triplets. The children in this study are the product of fertility drugs and come from five different upper socio-economic families. Drall and Feinstein were interested in the development of these children since, for at least two of the families, the infants were quite premature and/or smaller than average. In addition, because of the need for multiple caretaking in the early months of life, the authors had additional theoretical interests in their bonding and attachment. The theoretical questions that arose included whether development would be delayed because of their prematurity and possible problems with attachment. The literature available on prematurity suggests that there are later effects on development in low birthweight children. Previous studies on other multiples, such as twins, concerned themselves with separation-individuation and the development of separate identities in multiple birth children. The text however, addresses the emotional and personality states of these children in relation to their multiple birth status.

Table of Contents:
Introduction and review of the literature; our children; the families and how they coped; observing how they grew; "Catch Up" by two years of age; six children and how they grew; how mother and baby love influenced development; parenting and interventions; the path to speech and ability; school days; personality development; summary and conclusions.
