About the Book

Im Mittelpunkt des vorliegenden Buches steht die ewige Auseinandersetzung der Menschen mit Krieg und Frieden. Bevor wir vor etwa 5000 Jahren diesen Streit schriftlich belegen können, deuten archäologische Vermutungen darauf hin, dass auch schon vor der Erfindung der Schrift, dieses Thema das wichtigste der Menschheitsgeschichte war. Ob diese Auseinandersetzung gar den Lauf der Kulturgeschichte der Menschheit dominiert hat, wird unterschiedlich beurteilt. Unstreitig ist jedoch, dass es einen wesentlichen Teil der Kulturgeschichte in der Vergangen ausmachte sowie in Gegenwart und Zukunft ausmachen wird. Da ich mich seit Jahrzehnten mit dieser Fragestellung befasse, ist es natürlich selbstverständlich, dass bisherige Veröffentlichungen in dieses Buch einfließen. Das erste Kapitel des Buches geht von der kontroversen Auffassung aus, Krieg und Gewalt seien grundsätzlich abzulehnen oder der Krieg sei ein notwendiger Teil jeder gesellschaftlichen Ordnung, jeglicher Kulturgeschichte. Kapitel zwei versucht nachzuweisen, das spätestens nach Entstehung der Nationalstaaten, in deren Gefolge der Nationalismus die eigentliche Ursache für heutige Kriege ist, sich im 21. Jahrhundert der Nationalismus sich epidemisch ausbreitet und dadurch Die Zunahme von Kriegen wahrscheinlicher werden. Im Kapitel drei treffen die Überlegungen aus den beiden ersten Kapiteln auf den Zustand der Integrationsversuche in Europa nach 1945 mit Erfolgen und Defiziten, den Wirklichkeitssinn des gegenwärtigen Europas. Wo es aber einen Wirklichkeitssinn für Europa gibt, niemand wird ihn bezweifeln, muss es auch so etwas wie einen Möglichkeitssinn für Europa geben, um eine kizze, wie ein anderes Europa aussehen könnte. Eine solche wird in Kapitel vier skizziert. In den beiden nächsten Kapiteln gehen wir den Voraussetzungen nach, die den europäischen Möglichkeitssinn weiter entwickeln, dadurch, dass wir in Kapitel fünf den Nationalismus überwinden und Europa fähig werden.
