In den 1958 bis 1961 erschienenen Banden der 'Noten zur Literatur' wendet Adorno Uberlegungen aus der 'Negativen Dialektik', der 'Dialektik der Aufklarung' und anderer seiner Werke auf Literaturphanomene der Moderne an. Zahlreiche von ihm geschatzteAutoren wie Kafka, Beckett und Thomas Mann, unterzieht er auf diese Weise einer kritischen Analyse. Ein Beitrag zu Paul Celan ist jedoch, obwohl dies denkbar ware, nicht vorhanden. Adorno ist dabei durchaus unter die Bewunderer Celans zu rechnen: fur ihn vollbrachte Celan auf dem Gebiet der Lyrik das, 'was Beckett auf dem Gebiet des Theaters und Romans leistete'. So trug er sich lange Zeit mit Planen zur Niederschrift eines Essays uber Sprachgitter, woruber Celan, gerade vor dem Hintergrund der Goll-Affare, ausserst erfreut war. Zu einer Umsetzung des Aufsatzprojektes kam es jedoch nicht mehr: ein Fragment in der Asthetischen Theorie sowie einige Anstreichungen und Kommentare in Adornos Sprachgitter-Exemplar bleiben die einzigen Zeugnisse seiner Beschaftigung mit Celan.Der engere Kontakt zu dem Dichter entwickelte sich 1959 nach der Publikation von dessen viertem Gedichtband Sprachgitter - dem einzigen Gedichtband, den Celan Adorno personlich zukommen liess. Gleichzeitig ist es neben dem 'Meridian' das einzige Buch Celans, das nach Adornos Tod in dessen Bibliothek zu finden war.Umgekehrt stellten fur Celans Poetik die Werke Adornos neben denen Heideggers einen wichtigen Bezugspunkt dar. Zahlreiche Werke des Philosophen waren in Celans Besitz und ihre vielfachen Lekturespuren lassen auf eine intensive Auseinandersetzung schliessen. Insbesondere die, im Vergleich zu den vorherigen Gedichtbanden stark veranderte Asthetik des Sprachgitter-Bandes, ist auch als ein Resultat der Auseinandersetzung mit den TextenAdornos zu sehen. Aus diesem Grund bezeichnet es Joachim Seng nicht als Zufall '[...], dass der Dichter gerade nach der Publikation des neuen Gedichtbandes Sprachgitter die Begegnung mit dem Philosophen sucht.' Mit dem Begriff Involution hat Celan selbst ein entscheidendes Stichwort zum Verstandnis der Lyrik des Sprachgitters aufgebracht. Inwieweit Celan diese Gedankenfigur in derfruchtbaren Auseinandersetzung mit Adornos Kafka-Aufsatz gewann und in welcher Form Adorno wiederum auf ein Verfahren der Ruckbildung ins Anorganische zur Analyse von Celans Lyrik in der Asthetischen Theorie zuruckgriff, versucht diese Arbeit aufzuhel
