Der Zug der Pariser Frauen nach Versailles vom Oktober 1789 ist als eines der bedeutendsten Ereignisse der Franzosischen Revolution in die Geschichte eingegangen. Es scheint jedoch, als sei dies die einzige Begebenheit, in der Frauen in der Revolutionszeit aktiv beteiligt waren. Das Engagement von Frauen wird meist auf diesen als 'Brotmarsch' in Geschichte eingegangenen Protestzug reduziert. Jedoch war die Rolle von Frauen in der Revolutionszeit weit komplexer als lange Zeit von der Historiographie angenommen. Nicht ohne Grund wird von der feministischen Forschung die Franzosische Revolution als die 'Geburtsstunde des Feminismus' in Europa bezeichnet. Als Angehorige des 'zweiten Geschlechts' in jeder Hinsicht benachteiligt, muss es erstaunen, dass Frauen in den Anfangsjahren der Revolution mit ganz verschiedenen Aktivitaten in Erscheinung traten, die uber die traditionelle Rolle als Mutter und Hausfrau weit hinausgingen. Getragen von der Sehnsucht nach einem Ende der Unterdruckung, stimmten sie in den allgemeinen Ruf nach Freiheit und Gleichheit ein. Nicht nur als Beteiligte an Protestmarschen, auch als Herausgeberinnen von Zeitschriften, Initiatorinnen von Frauenvereinigungen oder Verfasserinnen von Petitionen oder politischen Schriften engagierten sie sich im Geschehen der Revolutionsjahre. Ziel dieser Untersuchung ist es, die Rolle der Frau in der Zeit der Franzosischen Revolution darzustellen. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei das weibliche Partizipationsverhalten und die Frage nach dem Grad und den Formen der Teilhabe der Frauen an den Ereignissen. Dabei soll vor allem untersucht werden, ob das Partizipationsverhalten der Frauen primar okonomischen Ursprungs war, oder ob politische Beweggrunde das Verhalten der Frauen geleitet haben konnten.
