About the Book

Cell Migration matches nearly all research areas in cell and developmental biology, genetics, and biomedicine. The field shows radical progress powered by the combination of new genomic tools, cell labeling techniques and the incorporation of new model systems. This is the first book to comprehensively cover cell migration from the identification of molecular mechanisms to the understanding of certain pathological disorders and cancer development.

Table of Contents:
Preface (Wedlich) I. CELL SHAPE MODULATIONS AND CELL SURFACE/NUCLEUS CONNECTIONS: PREREQUISITES FOR CELL MIGRATION Functional Phases in Cell Attachment and Spreading (Sheetz, Dubin-Thaler, Giannone, Jiang, Dobereiner) Polarised Cell Motility: Microtubules Show the Way (Small, Kaverina) Mechanisms of Eukaryotic Chemotaxis (Janetopoulos, Long, Devreotes) Dual Location Proteins: Communication Between Cell Adhesions and the Nucleus (Cline, Nelson) II. CLASSICAL EXAMPLES OF CELL MIGRATION IN DEVELOPMENT Cell Migration During Zebrafish Gastrulation (Castanon, Heisenberg) Aspects of The Origin and Function of Cell Mediolateral Intercalation Behavior (Mib) During Convergent Extension (Keller) On the Border of Understanding Cell Migration (McDonald, Montell) Glia Cell migration in Drosophila (Edenfeld, Klambt) The Neural Crest: Migrating from the Border (Bronner-Fraser) Primordial Germ Cell Migration in Zebrafish (Raz) HGF/SF c-Met Signaling in Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition and Migration of Muscle Progenitor Cells (Schaeper, Birchmeier) III. CELL MIGRATION CRUCIAL FOR IMMUNE RESPONSE, WOUND HEALING, AND TUMORIGENESIS Host-Pathogen Interactions and Cell Motility: Learning from Bacteria (Stradal, Lommel, Wehland, Rottner) Transendothelial Migration of Leukocytes (Muller, Schenkel) Chemokine-controlled Migration in Lymphoid Organogenesis and the Systemic Organization of Immunity (Lipp) Keratinocyte Migration in Wound Healing (Brakebusch) From Tumorigenesis to Tumor Progression: Signaling Pathways Driving Tumor Invasion and Metastasis (Giehl, Menke, Wedlich, Beil, Seufferlein)

About the Author :
Doris Wedlich gained her PhD in zoology at the Westfalische-Wilhelms-Universitat of Munster. She carried out her postdoctoral training at the Max-Planck-Institute for Developmental Biology in Tubingen, before directing her first research group at the Free University Berlin at the Institute for Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. In 1992 she was appointed Full Professor for Biochemistry at the University of Ulm and has been Full Professor and Head of the Institute for Zoology at the Universitat Karlsruhe (TH) since 2001. Today, Professor Wedlich's research is centered on Wnt-signaling and the regulation of cell adhesion as well as on the molecular processes of tumor invasion.

Review :
"... an excellent guide to current research in the field of cell migration... I highly recommend this book for all students of biology who are captivated by the thought of intelligent cells in directed motion." Doody's Health Services "...provides a good summary ... provide a useful introduction to the various mechanisms used for cell movement during development. ... This book would be useful to students or scientists who are interested in in vivo cell migration and perhaps for cell biologists looking for an appropriate in vivo system to study the function of a specific protein, or the relevance of in vitro findings. ... provide a helpful summary of the field and outline the open questions." Nature Cellbiology "... intellectually stimulating...an excellent resource for students, experienced researchers, and medical practitioners." The Quarterly Review of Biology
