Gegen Ende des 2. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. bemerkte schon der anonyme Übersetzer des deuterokanonischen Buches Jesus Sirach die beträchtlichen Unterschiede zwischen den hebräischen Texten von Gesetz, Propheten und anderen Büchern sowie ihrer griechischen Übersetzung, die sich in der sogenannten Septuaginta erhalten hat. Eine derartige non parva differentia stellte er auch beim Vergleich seiner griechischen Version und ihrem hebräischen Ausgangstext fest. Die Unterschiede zwischen hebräischem und griechischem Bibeltext waren den Auslegern und Übersetzern über Jahrhunderte bekannt. Viele von ihnen, so etwa Hieronymus, verbanden mit dieser Feststellung abwertende Urteile über die Zuverlässigkeit der Septuaginta. Spätestens seit der Zeit des Humanismus griffen christliche Ausleger aber immer wieder auf den griechischen Bibeltext zurück, wenn der hebräische sich als schwierig oder gar rätselhaft erwies, und suchten diesen wenigstens punktuell mit Hilfe der griechischen Textvarianten zu verbessern. In den letzten ca. 30 Jahren ist die textkritische Forschung am Bibeltext mehr und mehr von diesem Verfahren abgerückt. Der Text der Septuaginta wird vielmehr in seiner ganzen Vielfalt und Entwicklung als ein Zeuge der Textgeschichte des Alten Testaments angesehen, der eine eigene Betrachtung verdient. Die im vorliegenden Band gesammelten Artikel greifen diese Fragestellung auf. Anhand ausgewählter Beispiele vor allem aus den Psalmen sowie den Prophetenbüchern wird herausgearbeitet, dass die Übersetzer den Sinn ihrer hebräischen Ausgangstexte einerseits zu bewahren versuchten, andererseits aber auch neue inhaltliche Akzente setzten. Dabei ist ein Einfluss zeitgenössischer Theologie oft unverkennbar. Und dennoch ist damit nicht ausgeschlossen, dass die Septuaginta stellenweise einen ursprünglicheren Bibeltext bewahrt als die Hebräische Bibel.
