Excerpt: Historically, America began life as a set of British colonies, under the reign of the monarchy. In 1776, due to an increasingly tense relationship with Great Britain that had resulted from various unfair taxes and a lack of colonial representation in the British Parliament, the colonies came together and declared their independence. After an eight-year war, the colonies won their independence, and were declared as free and independent States, making America the first colony to cede from a European power and win its war of independence. Since then, America has gone through numerous trials and tribulations, from the Civil War to the Great Depression, to its involvement in both World Wars, as well as a rise to global power. Having won the Cold War after the fall of the Soviet Union, the United States of America is now recognized as the sole superpower on the globe.
