Die Briefe 1875-1886 umfassen Max Webers Lebensphase vom elfjährigen Schüler bis zum Studienabschluss des Einundzwanzigjährigen. Eindrucksvoll lässt sich entlang der 149 edierten und kommentierten Briefe der Bildungsweg des jungen Max Weber im 1871 gegründeten Deutschen Kaiserreich verfolgen: von der Schulzeit am humanistischen Gymnasium in Charlottenburg zu seinem rechtswissenschaftlichen Studium an den Universitäten Heidelberg, Straßburg, Berlin und Göttingen, einschließlich seiner Militärzeit in Straßburg. Die Briefe dokumentieren die enge Bindung an seine Familie, beleuchten seinen ungezähmten Lesehunger, sein frühes Interesse an Geschichte. Sie enthalten aufschlussreiche Selbstcharakterisierungen und Urteile zum verwandtschaftlichen Umfeld wie zu den politischen Entwicklungen der Bismarck-Ära, in die der Vater als liberaler Politiker und die sozialkaritativ engagierte Mutter unmittelbar eingebunden waren. Die oft tagebuchähnlichen Berichte seiner militärischen Ausbildung zum Reserveoffizier sind ein einzigartiges Erfahrungsdokument zum preußischen Heerwesen. Die Schilderungen seiner Studienzeit setzen uns in Kenntnis über sein breites intellektuelles Interesse über das Pflichtstudium hinaus wie über seine rege Teilnahme an burschenschaftlicher Geselligkeit. Die frühen Briefe, ausnahmslos an Eltern, Geschwister und nahe Verwandte gerichtet, zeugen von der im gebildeten Bürgertum sorgsam gepflegten schriftlichen Kommunikationskultur. Eine sachkundige Einleitung stellt die Briefe in ihre Kontexte; Editorische Vorbemerkungen, Kommentare, Verzeichnisse und Register erschließen den Band.
