Max Weber verfolgte die politischen Umwälzungen in Rußland mit großer Anteilnahme und innerer Sympathie, so daß er in kürzester Zeit Russisch lernte, um sich direkt über die Abläufe informieren zu können. Er sah in den russischen Ereignissen die letzte große "Schlacht" der liberalen Demokratie nach ihrem Siegeszug in West- und Mitteleuropa und vor allem in den Vereinigten Staaten. Es stand für ihn außer Zweifel, daß der Kapitalismus über kurz oder lang auch in Rußland eine Modernisierung der Gesellschaft erzwingen werde. Jedoch hielt er es in keiner Weise für begründet, davon auch eine Durchsetzung liberaler und demokratischer Grundsätze erwarten zu wollen. Der Band präsentiert die beiden umfangreichen Rußland-Studien, die 1906 erstmals als Beilagen zum Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik erschienen sind, ergänzt um einen russischen Text Max Webers über Deutschland und das freie Russland sowie zwei Berichte über mündliche Äußerungen Max Webers zur Lage in Rußland. In der Edition werden die Hintergründe erläutert, russische Eigennamen und Werktitel überprüft und nach heutigen wissenschaftlichen Standards in den Apparaten und Verzeichnissen präsentiert.

Geboren 1864 in Erfurt; Studium der Jurisprudenz, Geschichte, Nationalökonomie und Philosophie in Heidelberg, Berlin und Göttingen; 1889 Promotion über die Geschichte der Handelsgesellschaften im Mittelalter; 1891 Habilitationsschrift über Römische Agrargeschichte; Ordinarius für Nationalökonomie in Freiburg (ab 1894) und Heidelberg (ab 1897); Mitherausgeber des Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik und Redakteur des Grundriß der Sozialökonomik; umfassende Beiträge zur Methodologie der Sozialwissenschaften, zur Politik des deutschen Kaiserreichs, zu Wirtschaft, Politik, Religion, Recht und Kunst in universalgeschichtlicher Perspektive; nach langem, krankheitsbedingtem Interim schließlich Professor für Gesellschaftswissenschaft, Wirtschaftsgeschichte und Nationalökonomie in München (ab 1919); gestorben 1920 in München. (1930-2004)1968-96 Professor für Mittlere und Neuere Geschichte an der Universität Düsseldorf; 1977-85 Direktor des Deutschen Historischen Instituts in London; 1988-92 Vorsitzender des Verbandes der Historiker Deutschlands; 1976-2004 Mitherausgeber der Max Weber-Gesamtausgabe.
