Die rabbinischen Vorschriften, die in den entsprechenden Ordnungen der Mishna, der Tosefta und des Yerushalrni ausgeführt sind, umfassen einen ersten Zehnten (ma'aserot oder ma'aser rishon) und einen zweiten Zehnten (ma'aser sheni). Der erste Zehnte wird den Leviten gegeben, die davon den Priestern die Zehnthebe (terumat ma'aser) entrichten. Der zweite Zehnte, der zum Verzehr am Tempel an einem Wallfahrtsfest bestimmt ist und im ersten, zweiten, vierten und fünften Jahr des Siebenjahreszyklus entrichtet wird, wird nicht nach Jerusalem gebracht, sondern an die Armen, Witwen und Leviten gegeben. Ma'aserot (Zehnte) oder Ma'aser Rishon ist der 7. Traktat der Ordnung Zera'im. Der Inhalt der Mishna läßt sich folgendermaßen gliedern: 1. Von welchen Früchten der Zehnte zu geben ist und wann die Zehntpflicht eintritt. 2.-4. In welchen Fällen solche Früchte ohne Zehntgebung genossen werden dürfen. 5. Bestimmungen über den Zehnten beim Verpflanzen, ferner über den Verkauf an Leute, die im Verdacht stehen, keinen Zehnten zu geben. Der Zehnte bei Feldern in Syrien und in anderen besonders gelagerten Fällen, sowie zehntfreie Gewächse und Samenarten. Ma'aser Sheni (der zweite Zehnt) ist der 8. Traktat der Ordnung Zera'im. Der babylonische Talmud enthält keine Gemara hierzu. Der Traktat behandelt hauptsächlich den in Dtn 14,22ff. gebotenen Zehnten. Er sollte in natura oder in Geldwert in hoher Feier in Jerusalem verzehrt werden und wird zur Unterscheidung von dem den Leviten zustehenden Zehnten (Num 18,21 f.) der zweite Zehnt genannt.
