Ce samedi de juin 2002, dans la petite ecole de Saint-Etienne-sur-Usson, au coeur du Puy-de-Dome, Georges Lopez donne une derniere lecon aux eleves de la classe unique ou il a enseigne pendant plus de trente ans. De lui, nous ne connaissons que les images du documentaire Etre et Avoir celles d'un maitre d'ecole rigoureux, attentif, tenaille par la passion d'enseigner. Aujourd'hui, c'est l'histoire de cette passion qu'il nous devoile, a la premiere personne, dans un recit aux accents tendrement nostalgiques. Avec un formidable talent de conteur, Georges Lopez evoque d'abord l'univers pittoresque et jubilatoire des villages du Roussillon ou ce fils d'immigres catalans a grandi: les saveurs de la cuisine maternelle, la rudesse des travaux des champs, les parfums rustiques de l'ecole communale peuplent ses souvenirs d'enfance. La curiosite du petit Georges est insatiable. Tres vite, il se choisit un avenir: il deviendra maitre d'ecole. Viennent l'adolescence et les debuts de la vie d'homme, parfois difficiles, mais qui ne feront que confirmer sa vocation: malgre les echecs et les doutes, il decroche son premier poste de remplacant, puis se titularise. C'est le debut de longues annees de pratique pedagogique et de reflexions sur l'art d'enseigner. Au fil des pages et des souvenirs, Georges Lopez decrypte l'engagement qui l'a conduit a accepter de prendre en charge une classe unique puis, plus tard, de participer au projet d'Etre et Avoir. Il nous raconte cette aventure singuliere, nous en devoile les joies et les grandes deceptions et nous explique les raisons qui l'ont pousse a attaquer en justice la production du documentaire. A l'issue d'une saga judiciaire qu'il n'a pas gagnee, Georges Lopez nous demande d'entendre sa version des faits, et nous propose de lire ce que les images du film lui ont souvent derobe le quotidien sans mise en scene d'un instituteur convaincu qu'il exerce le plus beau metier du monde.

Georges Lopez a cinquante-neuf ans. Instituteur pendant plus de trente ans, il fut, en 2002, le protagoniste d'Etre et Avoir, un documentaire plebiscite par le grand public.
