La cinephilie fut une passion francaise, devorante et exigeante. Voir des films par centaines, seul ou en bande, mais aussi en discuter, ecrire, rencontrer les realisateurs, fonder des revues, animer des cine-clubs, se reunir, se combattre: c'est ainsi qu'a Paris, entre la Liberation et 1968, les grands cineastes du XXe siecle connurent la gloire. La cinephilie a en effet, pour une bonne part, fabrique Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, Roberto Rossellini, Jean Renoir et autres cineastes, les placant au rang d'auteurs et d'intellectuels qui, a l'instar d'Aragon, de Picasso ou de John Cage, ont fait la culture du XXe siecle. Mais qui etaient ces cinephiles ? Antoine de Baecque trace ici les portraits de ces jeunes mordus du cinema devenus critiques, cineastes eux-memes, ecrivains et journalistes: Andre Bazin, Eric Rohmer, Henri Langlois, Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, Claude Chabrol, Serge Daney, notamment. Il saisit ces grandes figures dans leur vie, leurs passions et leurs combats, au-dela meme du cinema et de son histoire: ces cinephiles, influences par le surrealisme, l'existentialisme, la litterature, le structuralisme, posent en effet un regard different sur les idees, les arts et les grands debats des annees cinquante et soixante. Fonde sur le depouillement d'archives privees, de tresors cinematographiques (les fonds Truffaut, Bazin, Sadoul, Langlois), et de revues fondatrices (L'Ecran francais, les Cahiers du cinema, Positif, Les Lettres francaises), cet essai reconstitue l'epaisseur des contextes intellectuels et politiques, et propose, a travers une douzaine de portraits de cinephiles, de groupes, de revues et d'auteurs, la premiere synthese sur la cinephilie francaise en son age d'or. Une maniere d'ouvrir et d'illustrer, et avec quel brio, une autre histoire culturelle de notre temps. Antoine de Baecque est historien et critique de cinema. Il a ete redacteur en chef des Cahiers du cinema, a concu un musee du Cinema pour la Cinematheque francaise, et dirige actuellement les pages Culture de Liberation. Il a publie une histoire des Cahiers du cinema (1991), des essais sur Andrei Tarkovski (1989), Manoel de Oliveira (1996), La Nouvelle Vague (1998), ainsi qu'une biographie de Francois Truffaut (1996, avec Serge Toubiana). Il est egalement historien de la culture des Lumieres et de la Revolution francaise.

Antoine de Baecque est historien et critique de cinema. Il a ete redacteur en chef des Cahiers du cinema, et a concu le Musee du cinema de la cinematheque francaise. Antoine de Baecque a dirige les pages Culture de Liberation. Il a publie de nombreux ouvrages, notamment: une biographie de Francois Truffaut (Gallimard, 1996); La Gloire et l'effroi. Sept cadavres sous la Terreur (Grasset, 1997); Les Eclats du rire. La culture des rieurs au XVIIIe siecle (Calmann-Levy, 2000); Tim Burton (Ed. des Cahiers du cinema, 2005); et La Cinephilie: Invention d'un regard, histoire d'une culture (Fayard, 2003).
