About the Author :
En 1955, a vingt-deux ans, Jean Herman, qui n'est pas encore Jean Vautrin, est diplome de l'Idhec. Il devient l'assistant de Roberto Rosselini, Styajit Ray, Vincente Minelli, avant de realiser Le dimanche de la vie (1965) et Adieu l'ami (1968). Dix ans plus tard, il entre en litterature: A bulletins rouges, puis Billy-ze-Kick, deux polars, tres remarques par la critique, bousculent les codes et ouvrent la voie a une nouvelle generation. Doue pour tous les genres, il obtient le Goncourt de la nouvelle, avec son premier recueil: La vie Ripolin (1986). A cette epoque, il cree, chez Fayard et avec Dan Franck, Boro, une saga historico-litteraire dont le succes ne se dement pas au fil des volumes. En 1989, Un grand pas vers le Bon Dieu (Grasset) lui vaut le prix Goncourt. Il fonde alors L'Atelier Julliard, ou il publie les meilleurs nouvellistes francais et etrangers, parmi eux, Annie Saumont et Xu Xing. Le cri du peuple, l'un de ses derniers romans, adapte en bandes dessinees avec Tardi en 2001, est un best-seller. Jean Vautrin a recemment publie aux Editions Fayard Si on s'aimait ? ainsi qu'un recueil de nouvelles, Maitresse Kristal et autres bris de guerre.
