About the Book

A fascinating, often humorous and brutally honest look at the journey of a monk, a yogi, specifically focusing on the sexual component to a spiritual life. Vanek had spent seven years as a Vippassana Buddhist Bikkhu and over forty years as a Bramachari Yogi. He lived in the mid-ranges of the Himalayas studying, teaching and running a business in religious icons for over twenty-five years. 'Unprotected Sects' is both his story and a description of the celibate-bramachari lifestyle he embraced. While people have many ideas about bramacharya, Vanek attempts to describe the reality, along with the rewards and possible pitfalls.

About the Author :
Nathan Vanek was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1951. The son of a prominent Judge, he attended York University where he wrote for the university paper, the Excalibur, before working for Canadian Press/Broadcast News and eventually feature-writing for several local papers on Vancouver island, British Columbia. Vanek has spent the whole of his adult life as a Vippassana Buddhist monk and a yogi, studying with some of the great masters and teachers of the times, such as U.N. Goenka, Swami Shyam, Ruth Dennison, Baba Hari Das and others. He spent over twenty-five of those years in India, eventually becoming a teacher himself. He has taught eastern philosophies and meditation for over two decades mostly in Canada, mostly near or at his home in Wakefield, Quebec. Vanek's knowledge, wit and wisdom is on full display in his blog: www.artdelapaix.ca, that he's written since 2010, as well as in his various books: A Wave Is Still Water, The Bridge Between (Bluemoose Books, ) The Legend of Anson Minor and Unprotected Sects (Hansa-Imaging).

Review :
'Unprotected Sects' is a great read and offers insight into a life and lifestyle that is foreign to most readers. I had difficulty putting it down. (Alan Bryce. Toronto, Ontario.) I absolutely loved 'The Legend of Anson Minor.' Every story is a gem. Whether set in the Himalayan Mountains or the Gatineau Hills, each tale was exotic, rich, and tremendously entertaining. (Judith Farraud. London, England.) 'Unprotected Sects' is a wonderful read and sheds a lot of light on a tradition largely misunderstood. What's more, Vanek's humour works its way onto every page. (Andrew Salkeld. Wakefield, Quebec.) 'Unprotected Sects' is the first book I've completed in a long time. It was interesting, in fact fascinating, and I found myself laughing in public places. It was a perfect book at a perfect moment for me. (Michael Racine, Waterton Park, Alberta.)
