About the Book

In the summer of 1884, eleven-year-old Gabriel Barlow returns home after spending months with his Cheyenne relatives near Lame Deer. There he was given a new name-Walks Two Paths-a name that reflects the life he now lives between two cultures.

Home on the frontier, Gabriel settles once again into ranch chores, school, church, and family life. Yet he returns carrying new wisdom learned from Cheyenne elders and a deeper understanding of his father's people. As he navigates friendships, prejudice, and the expectations of both worlds, Gabriel discovers that identity is not something that must be divided.

While the Barlow family grows and prospers, troubling changes are spreading across the West. Government efforts to separate Native children from their families threaten everything Gabriel has come to value. Soon he must face challenges that test his courage, loyalty, and sense of belonging.

Set in the Montana Territory during the 1880s, Walks Two Paths is a powerful coming-of-age story about family, cultural identity, and the strength found in honoring one's whole self.

Perfect for readers who enjoy historical fiction, frontier life, Native American history, and stories of family, resilience, and hope.
