About the Book

Santo Innis is developing a revolutionary new engine to counter the lethal effects of high-pressure steam. His backer is Richard Vaughan, heir to Frederick Tregarron, owner of Gillyvean estate. Following the tragic deaths of his wife and baby son, Richard immersed himself in work. But his world is turned upside down by the unexpected arrival at Gillyvean of Melanie Tregarron, a talented artist and Frederick’s illegitimate youngest daughter. Desperate to prove the viability of his invention, Santo persuades Richard to let him fit one at Gillyvean’s brewhouse. But when Bronnen Jewell - worried about her mother's suffering at her father's hands - arrives to brew the harvest beer she's horrified, fearing loss of the income on which she depends. As the lives of these four become entwined, a shocking revelation shatters Bronnen’s world; desperate for money Santo makes a choice that costs him everything; Melanie fears she will never be free of her past; and Richard has to face his deepest fear.

Review :
I really enjoyed this novel and that's high praise as I don't read historicals but these characters especially the women sprung off the page. I believed in them completely and I cared. The research about the engines was excellent. Very authentic. This is the second Jane Jackson novel I have read and I will read more. Very enjoyable. -- Della Galton - Author Amazon Review I LOVED this story and found myself so caught up in the lives of the four main characters that after trying unsuccessfully to put them out of my mind and get some sleep, in the end I simply had to sit up, switch on the light and read through to the end. The plot is well-constructed, and the characters beautifully drawn and believable. The author has a wonderful ear for dialogue and transports us effortlessly to 19th century Cornwall. The background is meticulously researched and detailed, but never allowed to weigh down the fast-moving storyline. I was genuinely moved in one or two places, so closely did I identify with Melanie and Bronnen. All in all, a cracking read which I highly recommend to anyone in search of quality historical romance. -- Jodi Taylor - Author Amazon Review
