About the Book

"Double or Quit" tells of the excitements - and frustrations - of having a new dog to train. The author's other German Shepherd, a lovable bitch named Chita, is getting to the point of retiring from Working Trials. Joyce has to decide; to double up on the number of dogs or quit trials for a few years. Will Josse, a German Shepherd of no known provenance, be able to settle down to his seventh home in only six months? He may prove to be difficult or even impossible to train. Will he be accepted by Chita? And will he learn to stop tormenting the family cat? Even the author, with all her experience, is not prepared for all the surprises that Josse springs on her. Written with the humour and common-sense which have become her trademark, "Double or Quit" isn't just a good story - it contains a lot of sound advice and practical tips from one of the country's leading trainers.

About the Author :
Joyce Stranger is the author of more than 70 books about the British countryside and the indomitable spirit of English rural folk. Even the 1960s she was writing about a way of life that was dying; and she always hoped that her books might preserve the history of rural life in England. Joyce's own family home was destroyed by a land mine in 1942. Many of her stories are concerned with those who have had to make new beginnings and havetriumphed over disaster.

Review :
Praise for Joyce Stranger:Joyce Stranger is that rarity among contemporary novelists in that her novels are always first and foremost enjoyable.-Gamekeeper and Countryside. Not only is Joyce Stranger a true animal lover, but she is an excellent writer. Her books are always a pleasure to read.-Book Exchange.Joyce Stranger is a novelist of the English countryside with a fresh talent for turning the small details of outdoor life into high drama. The harshness as well as the beauty of survival outdoors catches her sharp eye and everything comes splendidly alive.- Martin Levin, New York Times.
