About the Book

A second collection of poems by Idris Reynolds, the 1989 and 1992 chaired bard in both strict and free metre, comprising tributes to local and national heroes together with world-wide events.

Review :
Mae ail gyfrol o farddoniaeth y prifardd Idris Reynolds yn dwyn teitl dyfrol tebyg i’w gyfrol gyntaf, Ar Lan y Môr . . . (1994), ond rhaid wrth lygad craffach i ddod o hyd i’r halen yn nyfroedd y cerddi’r tro hwn. Ond yno y mae, serch hynny, cyhyd ag y bo’r halen i’w flasu yn awyr Ceredigion pan chwyth hwnnw o’r môr – canys cerddi’r bardd gwlad modern yw eiddo’r gyfrol hon. Ceir yma gerddi bardd i’w gymdeithas ac arnynt arlliw rhyngwladol a chenedlaethol sy’n lleoli’r lleol yn y patrwm eang, a’r eang yntau yn y lleol, heb gamleoli’r naill na’r llall yn ôl y galw. Wrth bori drwy’r gyfrol fe’n hatgoffir fod pawb yn hoffi rant, ac nad yw beirdd gwlad yn eithriad i’r rheol honno. Ceir yma ddigon o gwyno ac anfodlonrwydd, ond nid achwyn henffasiwn gŵr yn mynd i’w oed ydyw – ni ellir gwarafun i’r bardd ei grefft a’i bwynt, nac ychwaith y ffaith fod y pynciau sy’n dod o dan ei lach yn rhai cyfoes ac yn aml yn berthnasol i Gymry o bob oed ac ymhob ardal. Ac wedi’r cwbl, onid rhoi ei amser i’w ymson yw her bardd ar ben ei focs sebon? Enghraifft dda yw’r cywydd i Owain Glyndŵr, pan rydd y bardd ei feirniadaeth ar ‘henfro ffug y Gymru gŵl’. Dro arall canolbwyntir ar Geredigion, megis yn ‘O’r Cornelyn Hwn o’r Byd’, cerdd sy’n dangos anfodlonrwydd Idris ynghylch nodyn yn hysbysebu cyfraniad beirdd lleol i ddathliadau’r Jiwbilî yng Nghastellnewydd Emlyn. Y tro yma mae’r colyn fel pe’n brifo’n fwy pan fo’r bardd yn cael ei bigo ar ei domen ei hun. Terfynir gyda’r cwestiwn ‘Pwy yw ein local poets?’, cwestiwn annisgwyl ac ingol yn un o froydd mwyaf toreithiog y traddodiad barddol Cymraeg heddiw. Mae’r gerdd hon hefyd yn enghraifft wych o lwyddiant y bardd wrth lunio cerddi vers libre cynganeddol; mesur sy’n aml yn apelio at feirdd caeth yn rhinwedd ei ryddid ymddangosiadol, ond un nad yw’n aml yn ennyn y farddoniaeth orau yn y pen draw. Gwelir llwyddiant Idris yn y maes yn rhinwedd ei symlrwydd a’i gynildeb, megis yn y gerdd uchod, a ‘Bwrdd’ – ond nid yw ychwaith yn or-ddibynnol ar y gynghanedd, fel y dengys ‘Clera’ a ‘Dwy Genhedlaeth’. Un o ragoriaethau eraill y gyfrol yw ei gywydd Saesneg brathog ‘In Praise of My Neighbour’, yn mynd i’r afael ag un o’r pynciau mwyaf llosg yng Nghymru heddiw. Rhydd y cywyddau ‘Hi’ a ‘Fe’ gipolwg dadlennol inni ar y bardd ei hun, a thrueni nad oes yma fwy o gerddi cignoeth tebyg. Dengys ei gerdd gaeth ar ffurf rhyddiaith i’r prifardd Dic Jones (yn ogystal â’r ‘Englyn Pôs – Dot.Com’) ei fod yn dilyn yn nhraddodiad rhyddfrydol y clwstwr unigryw hwnnw o feirdd yng ngodre Ceredigion. Mae’r gyfrol yn frith o englynion caboledig, fel yw’r disgwyl, ac mae ‘Darlun’ a ‘Ffôn Fudol’ yn sicr ymhlith y goreuon. Yn wir, pwysleisir meistrolaeth y bardd ar fesur yr englyn wrth bedlera’r gyfrol, ond nid yr englyn, serch hynny, yw ei chaffaeliad pennaf. Yn absenoldeb awdlau (nad ydynt, mae’n debyg, yn rhan o gynhysgaeth naturiol y beirdd pan nad ydynt yn ceisio am gadair yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol, fel y dengys cyfrol ddiweddar Emyr Lewis yntau hefyd), mae’r cywyddau yn sicr yn talu am eu lle. Yn y mesur hwnnw (yn arbennig ‘Gelyn’, ‘Mileniwm’ a ‘Plethyn’) y clywir llais Idris Reynolds ar ei orau yma, a hynny yn rhinwedd cynildeb y dweud wrth drin y darlun eang yn ogystal â’r lleol – awen amryliw yn driw i draddodiad cyfoethog ei fro.
