About the Book

Emyr does not have a great deal of choice - stay in the hell of his home with his cruel parents or venture out into the wide world on his own, without anyone. After yet another attack he escapes from the house in the early morning to a new life, without any idea of what faces him - even without the certainty that there is anything better than the old life. But is not so easy to escape from the painful memories, especially as his body is still black and blue all over. 'I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree' says his favourite poet, W.B. Yeates, a quote which is nothing more than a dream, until he comes across Gerda, a strange old woman who becomes a true friend. With her even the impossible becomes possible...

Review :
Gan fod bron i ddeng mlynedd bellach wedi mynd heibio er cyhoeddi nofel ddiwethaf Alun Jones, fe fydd edmygwyr gwaith yr awdur o Lŷn yn falch o’i weld yn ailddechrau chwedleua ar glawr unwaith eto; ac, wrth gwrs, mae offrwm gan unrhyw lenor sydd wedi profi droeon ei fod yn storïwr heb ei ail i’w groesawu. Nofel seicolegol yw Draw Dros y Tonnau Bach yn ei hanfod, yn dilyn hynt a helynt Emyr – bachgen ifanc sy’n dianc o grafangau rhieni creulon sydd wedi bod yn ei gam-drin yn gorfforol ac yn emosiynol ers blynyddoedd. Ei unig ddihangfa yn ystod y cyfnod hir hwnnw oedd encilio i’r byd hudolus a rhydd a geir ym marddoniaeth W.B. Yeats, ac mae rhan helaeth o’r nofel yn dilyn ei ymdrech, obsesiynol ymron, i gyrraedd paradwys ddaearol ynys Innisfree a anfarwolir gan y bardd. Taith sydd yma, felly, ond taith sy’n digwydd ar sawl lefel wahanol. Ar un llaw, mae’r stori yn adrodd hanes Emyr yn dianc o’i gartref ac yn gwibio hyd heolydd dieithr ar ei feic, yn gyrru car i Gaergybi ac yn dal llong draw i Iwerddon; dyma’r daith gorfforol y mae’r prif gymeriad yn ymgymryd â hi. Ar y llaw arall, fodd bynnag, mae’n gorfod ymdopi â throeon trwstan taith seicolegol sy’n dipyn mwy o straen ar gorff ac enaid mor ifanc. Eironi creulon sefyllfa Emyr yw ei fod yn gorfod dianc er mwyn dychwelyd – ni all brofi blas rhyddid gwirioneddol tan iddo fynd yn ôl adref. Ac ar y pwynt hwnnw yn y nofel y mae Gerda yn gadael. Mae Gerda yn fwy o greadigaeth nag o gymeriad. A hithau’n gyfuniad difyr o wreigan henffasiwn ac ecsentrig annibynnol – gyda’i chyfeiriadaeth gyson at ‘y beth fach’ a’i diweirdeb ar y naill law, a’r awgrym ei bod yn cael ei hystyried fel gwrach gan ei chymdogion ar y llall – yr ydym yn cwestiynu ei bodolaeth yn gyson. Ond nid yw hynny yma nac acw mewn gwirionedd, gan ei bod yn bresenoldeb byw yng nghyd-destun Emyr. Mae hi’n ymddangos tua dechrau’r nofel pan ddaw, dan dantro, i mewn i fywyd helbulus y ffoadur ifanc, ac yn diflannu’n ddistaw pan fo stormydd bywyd y bachgen yn dechrau gostegu. Ydy, mae amseru Alun Jones yn y nofel hon ymron â bod yn berffaith. Megis cynhyrchydd unrhyw opera sebon gwerth ei halen, mae’r awdur yn gadael golygfeydd yn eu blas, yn dechrau penodau newydd i’n cosi; mae’r cwbwl yn dyst i brofiad awdur sy’n gyfarwydd â’r broses angenrheidiol o saernïo nofel. Fe hoffwn i fod wedi cael clywed mwy am rieni’r bachgen wrtho iddo ddygymod yn raddol â’r ffaith mai nhw, er gwaethaf eu ffaeleddau amlwg, yw ‘mam’ a ‘dad’. Yn yr un modd, mae Mos a Kate yn gymeriadau canolog sy’n mynd yn angof braidd tua’r diwedd. Ond ffaeleddau bychain yw’r rhain mewn gwirionedd. Oherwydd mae rhan helaeth o’r ymwneud a’r ymddiddan yn digwydd, yn fwriadol ddigon, rhwng glaslanc mewn gwewyr a hen wreigan hynod. Tybed?
