The European Stage III emission regulations and the Californian ultra-low emission standards aim at a percentage of zero emission vehicles by the end of the century. This has necessitated re-considerations of lean-burn combustion as one of the most promising concepts for the simultaneous reduction of fuel consumption and exhaust emissions in passenger cars.
