About the Book

The need to reduce exhaust emissions for car engines is well known. The design of combustion engines with special emphasis on emission reduction while saving fuel and enhancing performance is a great challenge for engineers. Advanced computational techniques supported by experimental techniques have speeded up design precesses considerably. A major international conference "Combustion in Engines", organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and held in London in December 1992 examined the latest developments in engine technology. Sessions covered computer modelling, diesel engines, spark igntion and combustion analysis. Some of the papers given were: development of a high fuel economy and high performance four-valve lean burn engine, warm-up characteristics of a catalyst heated by exhaust gas ignition and port throttles applied to a high performance four-valve SI engine. This volume contains the papers presented at the conference.

Table of Contents:
Diesel engine combustion chamber design with three-dimensional flow computations an investigation of the emission characteristics of the passenger car IDI diesel engine; development strategies for diesel combustion simulation using the SPEED code; application of CFD to the modelling of autoignition at high pressure in a cylinder; potential for engine control using neural networks; a turbulent combustion model used to give insights into cycle-by-cycle variations in spark ignition engine combustion; the sources of unburnt hydrocarbon emissions from spark ignition engines during cold starts and warm-up; emission-optimized fuel injection for large diesel engines - expectations, limitations and compromises; EGR feedback control on a turbocharged DI diesel engine; the development of the high performance IDI and low emission diesel engine; measurement and prediction of transient NOx emissions in DI diesel engines; in-cylinder sampling technique used in the development of the Ruston RK270 lean burn gas engine; combustion and emission studies in high-speed DI diesel engines; further development of a small diesel engine for low cetane number fuels; development of a high fuel economy and high performance four-valve lean burn engine; effects of exhaust emission control devices and fuel composition on speciated emissions of SI engines; improving the spark ignition process in an internal combustion engine using a new spark plug concept; correlation between in-cylinder flow, performance and emissions characteristics of a Rover pentroof four-valve engine; port throttles applied to a high performance four-valve SI engine; a basis for the predictive control of cyclic dispersion in a spark ignition engine; experimental studies of pre-ignition on a four valve engine; the future of combustion in engines; a comparison of hydrocarbon measurements with a fast response flame ionization detector and a rapid acting sampling valve; flame development in an SI engine measured by an infra-red camera; on the electric wind formation in spark plugs for SI engines; life on earth at the point of inflection; the development of a dry low NOx combustor for the 6.2MW tornado industrial gas turbine engine; new developments in catalytic combustion for industrial gas turbines; warm up characteristics of a catalyst heated by exhaust gas ignition; effect of certain catalysts in the combustion chamber of a two-stroke SI engine on exhaust emissions; post-flame release of hydrocarbons in a spark ignition engine.
