About the Book

London 1979. Tim Lomax is only twenty five and already setting up a new label with Rick, manager of the Ox. He's just won a major music award, and his Mother is finally getting out of hospital. He's even just met a girl called Loveday who bears an uncanny resemblance to the girl of his dreams. Everything's working out, the chanting uncertainties shaped like worms or ravens in his mind seem to have gone quiet, and Tim can't help telling Ned, his cat and confident, he thinks he might really have 'cracked it': give or take a couple of million...So, when Tim has a 'Big Idea' that ought to make them all millions, he drags everyone around him on a roller coaster ride to the 65th floor of euphoria and beyond: hookers, parties, mega deals, and bodyguards. Partying with the new friends, as the old ones look on in horror, love seems perilously close to hate. It's a battle between Tim, his worm, and the world, but which will win? Or will they all find a better way to take leave? A funny and enjoyable read despite it's subject matter, "Taking Leave", is packed with unforgettable characters, wryly humorous observations upon life the universe and everything, as well as some of the most fantastic comic set pieces you will read this year, or any other. This debut crosses Tom Sharp with Jonathon Coe, adding a dash of Nick Hornby, taking the reader on an immensely enjoyable, darkly comic journey, inside a deceptively convincing mind to the novel's compelling and redemptive end.

He lives in London and a Greek island with his wife. Taking Leave is his first novel."

Review :
'Taking Leave is a splendid first novel - funny, intelligent, moving and elegantly crafted. If you are interested in the record business, in lives out of control, or the plaintive and absurd frailties of human nature, then Thomas is your man.' A. L. Kennedy 'Jeremy Thomas is a complete original. His writing, like his life, is a whirlwind of brilliance, wonder and blunder, by turns hilarious and terrifying. Highly recommended.' Stephen Fry Set in the London music business of the 70s and 80s..contains some thinly-veiled references to some of the biggest business names of the time. Highly recommended - Music WeekFrom the front cover to the last page this book is a rollercoaster of entertainment and insights such as I have not read for a long time. The book's hero or anti-hero Tim Lomax, embarks on a series of musical and business adventures and misadventures, of increasing extravagance and implausibility, which gradually slip unnoticed into the realms of impossibility. The trail of destruction and detritus, which follow effortlessly in Tim's manic wake are horribly familiar to those of us who have raced through our own gates of perception into bipolar madness. This is a vivid account of the journey from overindulgence, and egomania into insanity. The story is gripping and the characters credible. Not only is it plausible but whilst Tim's plans so nearly work and the reader is drawn effortlessly into the ensuing chaos. This book is beautifully written, funny and inspiring. Regardless of its bipolarity, this book stands independently as one of the most original and engrossing reads for a long time. It is a fun read that shows a side of madness that rarely sees the light of print. Enjoy! - Pendulum
