About the Book

Providing an integrated approach to the problem of fracture, fatigue and safe design, with particular reference to advanced theories and novel computational approaches, this book contains the edited versions of most of the papers presented at the Seventh International Conference on Assessment and Control of Damage and Fracture Mechanics. Almost 50 papers are included and these make an important contribution to the state of the art in damage and fracture mechanics. They are divided under the following headings: fracture mechanics and fracture criteria; dynamic fracture; crack propagation and control; fatigue; experimental and computational methods; material characterisation issues; composite materials; and biomechanics.

Table of Contents:
Section 1 Fracture mechanics and fracture criteria: Computational fracture analysis of SEN-specimens under out-of-plane shear loading conditions regarding 3D and mode coupling effects; Usefulness of non-linear crack mechanics under plane strain conditions; Stress singularities, stress intensities and fracture initiation at sharp reentrant corners in elastic plates in bending. Section 2 Dynamic fracture: A novel method for the solution of the three-dimensional dynamic crack problems; Dynamic behaviour of electronics package and impact reliability of BGA solder joints; The failure mode and compressive strength of consolidated parts of ice ridge model; Precracking mitigates shrinkage cracks in cemented material. Section 3 Crack propagation and control: Crack propagation criterion and simulation under biaxial loading; Generalized model of fatigue crack propagation under total value of loading; Nonlinear deformation and crack interactions in semiconductor packages; Arbitrary system of combined cracks and slots propagating along interface between anisotropic half-planes; Fracture analysis of cement concrete pavement and a new idea of pavement design; Influence of localized damage around crack tip on fracture propagation; Crack characteristics of residual stress fields; Comparative study of tunnel face stability; The University of British Columbia Bonded Composite Repair Program: Research steps towards certification; Industrial application of two numerical models in concasting technology; Durability prediction using automatic crack growth simulation in stiffened panel structures. Section 4 Fatigue: The modified fatigue crack closure concept: further modeling and evaluation; Estimation of fatigue crack growth retardation due to crack branching; An experimental study on fatigue crack growth in lap joints with multiple fastener holes; Assessment of fatigue and fracture strength of transportation energy storage flywheel using finite element simulation; Accounting for effects of constraint on propagation of a fatigue crack. Section 5 Experimental and computational methods: A combined experimental - numerical study to monotonic and cyclic behaviour of limestone; A study to improve the measurement accuracy of stress intensity factor by the infrared method; Numerical modelling of the impact-echo method for materials characterisation; Smart materials for early damage detection; Defining the residual stresses on the gear tooth; An integrated approach for the design of stable mine backfill sillmats; Application of discrete hexagonal elements to rock bumps problems; Optimisation of structural integrity assessment with SINTAP procedure.
