About the Book

This title contains the proceedings of the First International Conference on Waste Management, one of the key problems of the modern world. As our awareness of the detrimental environmental effects of current waste disposal grows there is a significant need for more research on current methods such as landfill, incineration, chemical and effluent treatment and also on recycling, waste minimization, clean technologies, waste monitoring, public and corporate awareness and general education. The volume and complexity of the waste discarded intensifies this problem and creates tremendous pressure on disposal capacity forcing the international community to continuously search for optimal and, in accordance with new and more rigorous requirements, acceptable ways of dealing with this problem. Almost 80 contributions addressing a wide range of current waste management issues are contained in this volume. These are divided under the following broad subject headings: advanced waste treatment technology; methodologies and practices; clean technologies; physical, biological, chemical and thermal treatment methods; biosolids, composting and agricultural issues; organic waste for soil improvement; hazardous waste; landfills, design, construction and monitoring; separation, transformation and recycling; waste management strategies and planning; water and wastewater treatment; and community involvement and education.

Table of Contents:
Section 1 Advanced waste treatment technology: Assessment of environmental risk and waste treatment technology; Development of new recycling system of WC-Co cermet scraps; Effects of operational conditions on dry distillation characteristics of organic solid wastes; Gasification characteristics of municipal solid waste in the 20t/d gasifier; Development of high-efficient waste power generation technologies: feasibility study on the high-efficient waste gasification process; Development of high-efficient waste power generation technologies - Development of the waste pyrolysis and combustion with ash melting process technologies; Recycling of Si3N4 and ZrO2-Y2O3 ceramics by hydrothermal treatment; Preparation of porous adsorption material by cascade-recycling of industrial solid wastes. Section 2 Methodologies and practices: Solid waste management in the Baja California peninsula; influence of environmental conditions on the dynamics of biofilm development by the phenol degrading yeast; The level of phenol hydroxylase in Candida maltosa - the key activity for efficient aromatic compounds biodegradation. Section 3 Clean technologies: Corona plasmas: fundamental studies and industrial applications; CES OxyNol (TM) - A proven waste-to-ethanol process. Section 4 Physical, biological, chemical and thermal treatment methods: Production of biosurfactants in batch reactor for food waste composting; Application of synthetic zeolites to the depuration of a waste landfill leachate; Anaerobic treatment of sludge from a MSW landfill leachate treatment plant; Electrochemical treatment of aqueous phenol wastes: a preliminary economical outlook; Study of different assisting agents for the removal of heavy metals from MSW fly ashes; Biowaste composting kinetics at Almagro domestic solid waste management facilities; Environmental aspect of meat and bone meal co-incineration in thermal power plant; Application of sub and supercritical water technology for waste management; Thermophilic anaerobic treatment to industrial wastewater: number of micro-organisms and biomass. Section 5 Bio-solids, composting and agricultural issues: The use of composts in the biological control of pests: An alternative to chemical pesticides; Farmers' perception and willingness to pay for urban waste compost in Ghana; Energy evaluation of composting municipal solid waste; Modeling of solid waste composting under uncertainty; Stability and maturity indexes of compost; Multi-stage biofiltration for air pollution control in composting processes; Biodegradation of poly-e-caprolactone and its unexpected effects in an attempt to reduce ammonia emission during composting.
